In the days that Nels Stewart, Babe Siebert and Hooley Smith played
together as the famed S-line of the Montreal Maroons, they were
looked upon as the most feared trio in hockey.
Centre of this great line was Stewart, christened Nelson Robert
when he was born Dec. 29, 1900, in Montreal. He was also the top
marksman of the three, and his deadly accurate shot earned him the
nickname Old Poison from goalies around the National Hockey League.
He scored 134 goals and added 56 assists over the five years the
line played as a unit.
A burly, 200-pounder, Stewart skated with short strides that made
him appear deceptively slow, but he was truly Old Poison,
collecting a total of 324 goals and 191 assists in 653 league
games. He was the first to score more than 300 goals in the NHL,
a record that stood for many seasons.
Stewart learned his hockey in Toronto, where his family had moved
when he was a boy. He grew up in the Balmy Beach district with his
future linemate, Hooley Smith, and joined the Montreal Maroons for
the 1925-26 season. He scored 34 goals in his rookie season,
winning the league scoring title and MVP honours. He topped that
mark only once, when he scored 39 goals in 1929-30. He was traded
to Boston in 1932 and played three seasons with the Bruins before
moving along to the New York Americans. He remained with them
until retiring in 1939-40, except for 1936-37 when he split his
time between the Americans and Bruins. Stewart twice won the Hart
Trophy, in 1925-26 and 1929-30, and played for a Stanley Cup winner
in 1925-26.
He died Aug. 21, 1957, at his summer home near Toronto.
