While the West takes Freedom of Speech for granted, in Saudi Arabia it is a privilege that is not afforded to the common citizen. It is against the laws of al-Saud to speak if your words are to criticize the king or the government. There are strict laws governing the press and publications in Saudi Arabia, which violate human rights of individuals as well as the right for the media organizations to report the news the way it happens. 

It is also illegal to have a gathering of more than three people on the street. That is why theatres and any events where a large congregation of people may take place are illegal with the exception of two: Shopping Centers and Soccer Stadiums. They are both monitored constantly by al-Mabaheth (al-Saud internal security force) who can spring into action immediately for any sign of trouble. They usually hang around malls during late hours and just watch the crowds. The Mabaheth have hundreds of permanent seats in stadiums around the country and attend every game to monitor the crowds.
