Norns are not the only creatures out there, and some of those creatures are real dangers to your Norns should they ever cross paths. I am talking, of course, about the Grendel, the beast of the jungle. They're huge, disease carrying creatures that stalk Norns by the sense of their smell, sight and hearing. If a helpless Norn is nearby, you can bet they'll be following close behind.
Grendels
In the past, Grendels weren't that much of a threat. In fact, many people (myself included) took pity on the poor creatures and made sure they had food and water. A Grendel from Creatures 1 and Creatures 2 could be raised and trained to like Norns, and really, inside they were almost like Norns too. But in today's world, Grendels are vicious creatures who will kill your Norn if they get the chance. However, there are things you can do to help your Norns survive against such bigger creatures.
Norn Training: In the third or fourth room you come to in the Docking Station, you'll end up in the room called the Workshop. In this room is a dummy, with a bell at the top of its head. If you click the bell until the face turns into a Grendel, you can have your Norns practice "hit Grendel". This way, your Norn will know what to do when faced with one. However, Grendels, even when they're small, are much more hit resistant than Norns. An irritated Grendel may hit back harder, so you may want to teach your Norn "retreat Grendel" instead.
The Norn Head
Get Killer Norns: Yes, there are breeds out there designed just for the protection of their fellow brethren. These breeds are bred and genetically improved to take harder hits, hit harder themselves, and hunt down those who would do Norns harm. This picture is a baby Hardman Norn training to "hit Grendel". In my links page, I will show you several different types of Grendel hitting Norns. However, Norns that are trained and bred this way are often much harder to take care of than their peaceful counterparts.
The Grendel Head
Small Note: If you only have the Docking Station, you don't have to worry about the threat of Grendels. They only live on the Creatures 3 ship, and come out of the jungle to hunt. However, if you do plan on opening portals and playing online, I suggest you give your Norns a crash course in Grendel training. When the portals are open, you never know what may step through!
Starvation
As silly as it sounds, starving is a threat, and it happens more often than you would think. Starving, obviously, is easy enough to fix once discovered, provided it's not too late. Isolate the Norn, and shower it with a load of carrots, nuts and seeds using Control/Shift/E. There are several reasons why Norns starve, and not all of them have to do with not enough food lying around.

Sometimes Norns are too distracted to remember to eat. This happens most frequently in groups, where Norns are too busy keeping up with their social life to worry about food.  Youngsters are more prone to this. Again, isolate and feed.

Sometimes, Norns wander too far from steady sources of food. Since they're already isolated, feed them, and perhaps lead them back someplace where there is enough to eat.

Norns who are hungry tend to lay down and groan, and these symptoms should alert you immediantly as to what is wrong.
When you are ready, we'll move onto more a more complicated tutorial about Diseases and Poisons.
