Mt. Tammany Letterbox Clues

Overview: Located near Route 80 in northwestern New Jersey, Mt. Tammany is a prominence on the banks of the Delaware River. It is located near the southernmost portion of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (DWGNRA).

Scale: 1:114291 (Centered at Lat: 40.97199 Lon: -75.11733)

Getting There: Visit http://www.njskylands.com/odhikedwg.htm for information on getting to Mt. Tammany and trails that may be used to reach the top at "point of the gap". I suggest the "red dot trail" for a somewhat strenuous, but rewarding climb. You may elect to use the "blue dot trail" for a less strenuous, but longer hike to the top. Because of the terrain, I do not consider this a good hike for small children.

    Clues (I don't have poetic license...not even a learner's permit!):

Ignore magnetic declination, full speed ahead, just be wary of where you tread.

Atop Mt. Tammany is where you should look, to locate and stamp the finder's book.

Your search will begin at the blue trail's end. Find the three dots, and begin to wend:

60 paces on 110, then 28 on 65; 23 paces on 310 -- closer and closer you strive.

16 paces on 240, and last but not least, 20 on 330; soon your search may cease.

The object is in a tree that is down, hollow and dead on the Jersey ground.

    Happy hunting!

Notes: Some or all of this hike is on State Game Lands and other hunting areas. If you're going to search for the box during hunting season, it's best to limit your hiking in this area to Sundays. Outside of hunting season, no worries! Wear sturdy hiking boots as this trail is very rocky.

NOTE 1: Off-trail walking may be involved. There is very steep and rocky terrain in the area.

NOTE 2: Be wary of snakes and other wildlife when reaching into dark places. All bearings magnetic unless otherwise noted. A pace is a long stride counted on a footfall of either foot, i.e. two paces are counted each time the right foot hits the ground.

NOTE 3: Please replace all letterbox contents and re-hide the thing well were you found it.
