No real additional headway yet. I have begun to believe that the
Bedford County Adams are not neccessarily connected to the John Adams of
Maryland...still can be, but it seems the Robert Adams I thought may be
brother to Elijah may not be a brother. Still, though, I think they can
be connected as Elijah's father (or possibly a brother) is most likely
the Samuel Adams that died 1781-2, and Robert Adams' father is also a
Samuel.
But worse than that I was contacted by a descendent of Elijah Adams
and Hannah Blair who says this Elijah (mine) is not the son of Elijah
and Hannah in Bedford County....that this Elijah (son of old Elijah) was
still in Bedford County in 1836. Don't know if he is correct or not...I
don't know how he ascertained the Elijah in 1836 as son of Elijah and
Hannah instead of a grandson through one of the other sons. He did say
my Elijah is from Bedford, however. So that puts me back one notch in
this whole puzzle. Gotta now find proof as to where my Elijah fits.

went to Ohio and lived with one of her children.
I currently have 134 descendants of Elijah S. and Eva (Griffith) Adams. Elijah
was born 1781 in Indiana Co., Pennsylvania and moved before 1820 to Wayne Co.,
Ohio where they are both buried in Congress Twp. It was their descendants
that later moved to Elkhart Co., Indiana etc. It would really help if Elijah
S. would have been mentioned in the will of Elijah Adams d. 1798.

They were probably married in Bedford,
PA. They had following children:

Elijah is our ancestor and he was born 1788/1798 in
St. Clairsville, Bedford, PA.
He had a son Alexander but he was born in Ohio.

John Adams from Co.Antrim
John Adams, emigrant to USA from County Antrim, Ireland,
left Will in Somerset County, NJ in
1752 naming sons Matthew, William, James and Samuel. Samuel moved to
Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and had at least two sons--Robert and Samuel Jr.

I descend from Elijah Adams (probably born early 1740s) who resided in Bedford County,
Pennsylvania. In 1782 he was appointed guardian of Archibald Adams, son of Samuel
Adams, deceased. I am trying to find a connection (if one exists) with my Elijah and the sons of this
John Adams, emigrant.
Elijah's oldest son was named Robert, which was a common name in family of Samuel Adams
Sr...and Samuel's son Robert had a son named Robert who named his son Elijah. I
believe a connection exists, but....

Robert
Robert Adams, son of Samuel (son of John) was born about 1743 probably in New Jersey. He went
to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and married Elizabeth Chambers. He
died there in 1806. This Robert had a son Robert (1769-1850) who went to Ohio.
Elijah Adams (my ancestor who may, or may not, be a son of Samuel, had a son Robert that I only
know of by being first named in the Will of Elijah Adams (1799-Bedford Co., Pa)
and don't know anything else about him, but assume he may be a Robert Adams buying land
1817 Bedford County (witnessed by his possible sons John and Elijah), and also
probably the Robert Adams that died 1822 in Bedford County.
As to the other sons of John (Matthew, William and James) I know nothing of them other than their
names from John's Will in December 1752 Somerset Co., New Jersey. If any of
them went to Virginia (or descendents) I don't know. I am trying to connect my Elijah to this family
(or find proof he does not connect). All I know of his kin for positive other than
his children is that in 1782 in Bedford County, PA, he was chosen by Archibald Adams to be his
guardian, and that Archibald is son of a Samuel Adams who died about that time in
Bedford County.
John from Co.Antrim
John Adams, emigrant to USA from County Antrim, Ireland,
left Will in Somerset County, NJ in
1752 naming sons Matthew, William, James and Samuel. Samuel moved to

I descend from Elijah Adams (probably born early 1740s) who resided in Bedford County,
Pennsylvania. In 1782 he was appointed guardian of Archibald Adams, son of Samuel
Adams, deceased. I am trying to find a connection (if one exists) with my Elijah and the sons of this
John Adams, emigrant.
Elijah's oldest son was named Robert, which was a common name in family of Samuel Adams
Sr...and Samuel's son Robert had a son named Robert who named his son Elijah. I

(ca 1717-1818) and Elizabeth Hartzel Adams line in Bedford Co PA, and noted
that you seem to be connected through a collateral line. Obediah is the son
of Elijah and Hannah Blair Adams.

Jersey. Would it be possible for you to share a reference with me, so that

Obediah's daughter Ruth Anna (who married Enos Ellis, Sr); copies of court
records of Obediah's sons Samuel and Solomon being bound out after

Elijah in KY
I have been informed that my ancestor Elijah Adams was born in Indiana Co., PA in 1781.
Before his family lived in Indiana Co., they
had lived first in York, then Bedford Co., PA.
Before 1820 Elijah moved his family to Wayne Co., Ohio.,
most of his sons moved before
1850 to Elkhart Co., Indiana.
Their names were Daniel, Thomas, Elijah, Jesse, Joseph and Elias.
That is where my ggrandmother, Hattie
Adams, granddaughter of Thomas was born in 1867.

Elijah Adams, born 1799 Kentucky.
He was married about 1821 in Nicholas County, KY, to
Susannah Leeper and moved 1828 to Callaway County, Missouri.
His father was also named Elijah
(I believe he is from Bedford County, PA) but was wondering if he
was the Elijah Adams in Montgomery County, KY in 1800 and possibly 1810
in Greene County, Ky.
Does these areas fit your Elijah's residences in Kentucky prior to Barren
County? Just trying to straighten out who the Elijah in Montgomery and Greene

Hester Adams, born 1785, died 1846 in Vermilion Co., IL.
She married, in 1805 in Harrison Co., KY,
William McKee (1783-1872), of Fleming
Co., KY. Hester was the daughter of
Elijah and Hannah Adams, according to her obituary.
Elijah married Hannah Blair, sister of Alexander Blair of Nicholas Co., KY,
and other Blairs
(their father was William Blair, d. 1788 Bedford Co., PA, who came from Ireland).
Beyond the fact that Elijah Adams married Hannah Blair (probably early 1780s),
I haven't located him. It seems possible that he died by 1804 and his widow moved to
Nicholas Co., KY, to be near her family.
Hester had a large family, including sons John Adams McKee (1808-1876),
Elijah A. McKee (1821-1869), and Ephraim A. McKee.
There was an Ephraim Adams, b. c.1789, who went to Boone Co., IN,
then Rock Island Co., IL; an Alexander Adams, who
m. in Nicholas Co., KY; James Adams, b. c.1797, who went to Boone Co.,
IN; Elijah. I suspect they were all children of ELijah and Hannah.

He was is War of 1812 (have a War Record for Matthew Adams, not
sure if this is him), wounded in War and was a cripple and
used crutches all his life. He married NANCY COLVERTSON and
lived in Mercer, PA. Cannot find him in
Census Records for Mercer, PA.
His father Wm. ADAMS 2nd cousin to Pres. John Adams Family.
All that is known. Do you know of this MATTHEW ADAMS? He
had 10 sisters/brothers that lived in PA.

The first of these is William I. Adams, born circa

He came to Virginia in 1742 with James McCoun.
Both were loomers and farmers by trade.
William married Mary Walker in 1744 and had seven children

William moved to Mercer County, Ky in 1779 with a group called the McAfee Company.
William, Jr. was born in 1768 in Botetourt County, VA and
died in 1808 in Mercer County, KY.

Samuel, the son of William I. Adams, also had a son named William.
This William was born in
1777 in Botetourt County, VA and died 1851. He married a Mary Woods.
From another line, another William is William Greer Adams,

born 1770 in Botetourt County, VA and died in 1843 in Vigo County, IN.
He was among a company of men who were the first in
settlers in Vigo County, IN. They farmed
corn for Harrison's troops at Fort Harrison in what is now Terre Haute.

Mary Walker came to Virginia with sister Margaret, an uncle, and her brother Samuel.

mother's sister, and related to George Rogers Clark.
My husband Denzil is descended from two of William's children - Anne and Samuel.
Anne's son (William Greer Adams) married Samuel's daughter (Mary Adams)
his first cousin. Samuel and Mary settled in Vigo Co. IN along with their children.

We believe Samuel was of Scotch-Irish(also known as Scots-Irish or Scot-Irish)
lineage (Scots who immigrated to the Ulster Plantation in Northern Ireland after 1600.
We do not know if he immigrated here from Ulster or was born in Virginia.
We do know that he lived in Botetourt County, VA (where he met Anne).
He moved to Mercer County, KY in 1779 with a number of Scotch-Irish families -
other Adamses (including his in-laws), McAfees, McCouns and others.
This group was known as the McAfee Company. After settling
the region, most of the group again moved, this time to Indiana along with the Nevins families,
between 1811 and 1814, settling in what is now Nevins Township in Vigo County and
Adams Township in Parke County. They were among the first settlers in the region. William Greer
Adams was the first settler in Nevins Township in 1811 (apparently some of the
families may have waited in Clark County before settling with the rest.

Adams,William Greer Adams and his brothers with the Nevins and McAfee

so I thought I would place it here for
reference for those who need information on the origins of their Adams ancestors
from Northern Ireland.
My Adams line Samuel Adams (of Botetourt Co., VA - date and place of birth unknown),
and his father-in-law, William I. Adams (b. circa 1717-23 in Antrim County, Ireland -
also of Botetourt Co., VA) came from Ulster. Here is the story of Ulster:
The Ulster Plantation is modern day "Northern Ireland," which is part of the United Kingdom and
the subject of much news over attempts to bring peace to this violence torn region.
The Ulster Plantation was formed in the early 1600's by King James I of England (who was also
James VI of Scotland). England since the time of the Normans had been unable to
subdue the Irish - yet refused to withdraw from the island - for fear of giving its strong enemies -
such as Spain and France - a friendly foothold, so close to its borders.
Elizabeth's soldiers - just prior to her death - subdued, in a very bloody fashion, a Irish rebellion in
the north. James declared the rebel chiefs property as forfeited to the crown, and
offered to Scottish Presbyterians the opportunity to settle in the Ulster provinces. This solved
multiple problems ( in the short term) for James. The Scottish lowlands were horribly
impoverished and overpopulated. Scottish noblemen wanted more grazing lands for sheep herding.
The Irish were Catholic, and James wanted protestants to secure his borders.
Hundreds of thousands of Scots settled in Ulster. Conditions were harsh, filled with war and famine.
Between 1700 and 1800, hundreds of thousands of these Scots came to
America. They were called "Scotch-Irish" to distinguish them from the native, Catholic Irish. They
were not Irish, but did come from Ireland.
At the time of the Revolution, they represented about 10% of the population. They were poor,
rugged and courageous settlers, who carved the frontier and bore the brunt of the
Indian attacks on the colonies.
George Hancock was born 1790 in York Co., PA. He moved to Bedford Co., PA ca.1800. He married Ann McGregor, dau. of Alexander and Ruth
McGregor and they moved to Clearfield Co., PA about 1820.

I have been looking for the children of
Nancy Mary Monroe b. 1839 in Ohio, who was
m. to Anthony H. McGregor in 1858 in Ill. I don't know where they went after
they left Illinois, except their daughter Mary Helen McGregor
m. John Bailey Gray 1884 in Montrose, CO, and she
died 1914 in Silverton, CO. Hoping to hear from
