| Mach 2 (2001) Cast:Brian Bosworth, Shannon Whirry, Lance Guest, Michael Dorn, Bruce Weitz, Cliff Robertson Brian Bosworth stars as an air force pilot forced to take on the secret service who have seized the plane which the Vice President's rival is on, in order to get their hands on a disc which shows the vice president as dirty, of course people are shot at and Bosworth saves the day but this pedestrian effort is one of those why did they even bother type movies. At least the production values are better than usual. Mach 2 is a typically brainless Die Hard clone, actually that's not right, the structure is of an Executive Decision and I didn't like that movie so you can bet I hated this one. The problem with Mach 2 is that there's no action, it's simply Bosworth trying to talk reason to the secret service agents, without ever once trying to leap in and save the day, not until the corrupt agents are off the plane at least. While this is probably more realistic, it never makes for a good actioner, especially since it turns into Airport. However things start promisingly enough with a good actionscene, with Bosworth derailing terrorists who are planning on blowing up a big city, but while this starts the film out promisingly it also fizzles the second everything goes to the air. Would you also believe that one of the sub-plots involves Bosworth being affraid to fly? And would you believe who has to save the day? Mach 2 is predictable and overall pretty dull but fans of Bosworth may find something here to enjoy, if they look hard enough. D.Fred Olen Ray *1/2 |
