City On Fire (1987)

Cast:Chow Yun-Fat,Danny Lee

CYF goes undercover to infiltrate a group of bank robbers.Although lacking that special something that made A Better Tomorrow a very rewarding expierience.

City On Fire is an all around must see for anybody who has thrilled to the likes of The Replacement Killers and The Corruptor. These two bad movies have somehow gotten a cult by teenagers who need "coolness" added to their action. I of course didn't care for The Corruptor but didn't like The Replacement Killers at all. City On Fire however is what those both tried hard to rip off and to no avail.  This is a very well made movies with some good natured humor every now and then (Something Lam lost in his subsequent U.S work) of course the real effective points of the story come from the relationship between Chow Yun Fat and Danny Lee.  Although City On Fire pioneered the even better Reservoir Dogs, City On Fire still has enough texture to make this one of  Lam's best directed efforts. Although Prison On Fire is fare more intense, Lam's ability to choreograph action never stops surprising viewers. Sadly Ringo Lam should be doing more in the U.S then just directing straight to video Van Damme actioners. But that's Hollywood for you.D.Ringo Lam ***1/2
