It has been set up recently to give young people a new learning experience. The youths involved in learning from the project come out feeling very rewarded and aware of many issues that they did not know about before.
Now your probably thinking, ok so whats different about this and normal teaching? Well there is a huge difference and that is age. As this is a peer education project the teachers are peer educators. This means that all the educators are of a young age and around the age of the people they are going to be teaching or a little older. They know what its like to live in todays youth environment. This is shown in their teaching methods.
Peer educators tend to use a less formal method of teaching as young people do not enjoy being told what to do. Peer education is not about telling people what to do, it i s about giving them the information they need to make the right decisions in life. As if a young person has their mind up about something its very hard to change that, but the peer educators teach also about harm reduction so if someone does do it they can do it in a less harmful way.
The young people who get the chance to be involved in peer education learn alot from the sessions they partake in. This is because they find it easier to relate to the peer educators as they are of the same age. They can also find it easier to ask for advice as peer educators know exactly what its like to be a youth of today and how to survive in todays modern world.
It is a valuable way of getting positive messages across to young people in both formal and informal settings. The peer educators we have are tailored and activities can be tailored tyo meet the needs of the group taking into account age, settings and relavent issues.
