Twenty-four years ago, a group of young students envisioned a dream. It was 1983 and the science of Genetics was undergoing a revolution. Twenty-two young students established a forum that would make possible the exchange of ideas regarding the science of Genetics as well as its dissemination to the public. The desire, the spirit of free enterprise, and the dictates of time have permitted their young minds to pursue the journey of a meaningful vision that led to the birth of the UPLB Genetics Society on the 20th of December on that very year. In its early years, the society developed a reputation as a force in campus quiz contests. It proved itself as a worthy academic organization when it launched its first Genetics Week with praise and success in 1986. In 1990, after seven years, the society took a bolder step as it sponsored the first-ever National Genetics Symposium. The 2006 Genetics Camp for high school students paved way for extensive progression and has been continued together with its quiz contests, exhibits, symposia, and social awareness programs. One Gene: One Child is a new development of the organization to reach out to the disabled autistic children. |
