CHILD ABUSE
Child abuse is intentional physical abuse, emotional abuse, neglect or sexual abuse. The Child Abuse Prevention Treatment Act (CAPTA) defines child abuse and neglect as any recent act or failure to act that results in imminent risk of serious harm, death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation of a minor (Whalley & Wong 1999).
Approximately 25-27 out of every thousand children are reported yearly as being victims of child abuse. Factors that may lead to child abuse may be stress, which may be a response to an event that would not necessarily be stressful for an average parent. Child abuse crosses all socioeconomic levels because stress occurs at all levels and stress generally has a greater impact when people do not have a strong support system or service around them (Pillitteri, 1999).
