Indian women immigrating to Canada find pregnancy and delivery can be very difficult. Many have entered into an arranged marriage. They have been separated from the support of family and friends and lack knowledge of Western medical procedures and techniques.

They experience stress due to adjustments to new language, culture, a new husband and in-law family plus all the physical and emotional changes associated with pregnancy.

Few women attend prenatal classes in the South Fraser Health Region even though these classes are designed specifically for Indo-Canadian women and their partners.

Reasons given for lack of attendance:

  • The mother-in-law is considered to be the expert family health care provider.
  • Topics related to pregnancy and childbirth should not be talked about in public.
  • Women are very modest and generally do not breastfeed in public or in front of male visitors.
