Resolutions

Amidst healthcare reform, healthcare organizations and community facilities must be committed to quality assurance programs and risk management strategies. Only then will patients and their families be assured of safe and cost effective care. However, Dunleavy, Shamian & Thomson research reveal, there is growing concern that nurses are reaching a point of overload, where they will no longer be able to put patients first Canadian Nurse (2003).

Nurses are the largest group of care providers, therefore have the greatest potential to affect patient care and fiscal outcomes. They must maintain high standards and practice evidence based nursing in order to promote cost effective quality patient care.

It is essential that Government and health care institutions commit to recruitment and retention programs, and promote educational opportunities for nurses. Dunleavy, Shamian & Thomson (2003) wrote, nurses, in partnership with nursing associations, continue to advocate for improvements at the provincial and federal levels, this conviction and the energy that comes with it can be tapped into at the local level (p. 26)

I believe nursing will witness a monumental shift in the profession if they continue their pursuit of excellence. Nurses at large, must own their commitment to nursing, assemble an articulate voice and collectively provide innovative solutions for the current barriers preventing them from meeting their practice standards. Mooney states, to do what is best for patients (with cancer) in the new millennium nurses must think more broadly about their roles-not only managing individual patients and providing treatment but also continually reviewing the literature for new knowledge that will lead the way to improving (cancer) care (2001).
