Shri Hatkeshwar

The Veda followers accepted the Shiv worship around 600 B.C. The benign aspect of Shiva and the fierce one - Rudra - were recongnised as two sides of the same coin. Shiva influence spread out of Aryavarta. In 1270 Vishaldev Vaghela of Gujarat sent his erudite Minister Pandit Nanak to have religious debate with Jain Acharya Hemchandrasuri. It is said that Arjun self - exiled to forest for 12 years on violation of code of conduct established between brothers after marriage with Draupadi. He went to the land of Nagas where he stayed with ULLUPI who bore his son. Next he went to stay with Chitrangada daughter of king Chitravat. Arjun later married Shri Krishna's sister Subhadra. After the Maha Bharat war Pandavas arranged Ashvamegha Yagna on suggestion of Ved Vyas. Shri Krishna who came to attend the Yagna revived the dead son of Uttara to the happiness of all. But this happiness was to be shortlived. Babruvahan, Arjun's son, staying with Nag relatives unwittingly defeats and kills Arjun. Ullupi then advises Barbuvahan to pray before the Shivling which Babruvahan's grand-father-hatak-king of Nagas worshipped. The sanjivani given by the Hatak Shivling revives Arjun. The family brought the Hatak Shivling from Nag areas - Aasam, Madya Pradesh to Vadnagar to be worshipped as Hatkeshwar by the Nagars. In Skand Purana Shiv created Nagars to solemnize his marriage to Uma and allotted land for settlement at Vadnagar.
