Narsinh Mehta (1414 to 1481 A.D.)
GOD'S OWN POET LAUREATE

While Shri Krishana created the lofty ideal of the Sthit Pragna in the Geeta, Narsinh Mehta's Vaishnav Jan is a practical, down to earth, understandable version of the ideal. No wonder Mahatma Gandhiji the scholars and the musicians of the day took a fancy to "Vaishnav Jan". Narsinh was not only a devoted saint and a poet but also a great Philosopher. This sustained him through acute penury, neglect by the family and personal vicissitudes. His Lordship pervaded the entire universe (Akhil Brahmanad ma ek tu Shrihari) How he then threat any one as an untouchable ? And when his dear wife Manek departs :- Bhalu Thanyu Bhangi Janajal - as God likes it - would now worship unrestrained. Or again, on human anxiety - Aapno Chintaviyo Arth Kai Nav Sare, reminds of "we look before and after and pine for what is not". The Lord takes care of his worldly needs - e.g. Narsinh Mehta's Hundi and Kunvarbai's Mamera. And when, not Narsinh, but his Lord, is put to test on presence of the king, as if by magic the temple doors open and the Lord sends a garland to adore Narsinh.

ALL PERVADING

You alone pervade the entire Universe, My Load,
With Semblance of interminable mosaic of forms.
Body's spirit, element of light,
From nothingness emanate as Word
And fill the scriptures.

You're the wind, also water, soil you are,
Supporting the earth!
Expanding in the sky tree you are,
Designed forms profusely to suit varied tastes,
From cosmos came to being, to recreate oneself.

Vedas say this - commentaries concede,
There's no distinction between earring and Gold,
With designs diverse, and names numerous,
- All are but gold, and only Gold.
(Also, mankind to the same mould)

Books only baffle,
Don’t reveal truth,
Let everyone revere to inclination,
Truth, - as appealing mind, speech and action.

In plants you're the seed,
And seed begets the tree,
With a thin veil betwixt,
That discovery you yearn, O Man!
Will unfold through abiding love.

I awake and Lo! The universe is vanished!
The Mind and spirit merged in deep infatuation, The Whole amusing the Perfect.

VAISHNAV JAN

The Upright Man He is the religious person - Vaishnav Jan -
Who partakes others' pains',
Provides relief to the distressed,
But precludes ego's gains.

Respects every one,
Offends none of the mankind,
Steadfast in speech, character and mind,
Blessed be his mother.

Righteous and averse to avarice,
Revering other women as mothers,
Never resorting to untruth,
Not covetous for money of others.

Impervious to attachment,
Renunciation resides in his nature,
Engaged in communion with the lord,
All pious places poised in his person.

Not given to temptations or treachery,
Free from lust and petulance,
Seeing him, shall, for generations,

Pave way to deliverance.

HIS WILL

That Which the Lord has conceived,
Is not to be grieved,
Our vexations of no avail,
It's providence protects,
We can only wait and wail.

"I m doing, " "I alone am doer", is fallacy,
As believes the dog under the cart,
The world is built on illusions of sort,
Only ascetics and Yogis know the art.

If humans could harness happiness,
End all enemies and distress,
Haves and Have - nots disappear,
Attain pinnacle of prosperity forever.

There's a time and season when -
Plants sprout, bear leaves, flowers and fruits,
Men ponder and pin for naught,
Each partakes his due on time apt,
Lord has his season - neither early nor late.
