EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS

45rpm Single

SIDE A - Earth vs. the Flying Saucers

HISTORICAL CONTEXT*

This single is the soundtrack to a brief film the Residents made, featuring clips of the sci-fi B-movie of the same name. The Residents intended it as a prototype for a series of clips-with-music called "Science Fiction's Greatest Hits," which never panned out due to issues with the rights. However, the Residents did release their brief soundtrack to the prototype, which was attached to first-edition copies of the book The Cryptic Guide to the Residents. The single was one-sided, green vinyl in a white sleeve.

The Residents also performed this track on the 13th Anniversary tour; snippets of it are used in the video for "Where Is She?" that came from that tour.

REVIEW

RATING: 6

At 45 seconds, I leave "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers" feeling like I've heard a good start, but I want more. Where any given Commercial Album song could nicely wrap up ideas in 60 seconds, "Earth" leaves you hanging...and the worst part is that this little scrap is great! So right as it builds you up for something completely stunning...it disappears! Nooooo! Bring it back! Add another minute-and-a-half and you've got a 7 in the bag, I promise!
