General Rules For Living At Mylne'sThis page is an outline of some of the more pertinent regulations, together with useful information for residents. For the rule and regulations in full, please consult your accommodation brochure. SecurityIn an emergency, you can dial 999 from the ResNet phone in your room. Please carry your Mylne's Court ID with you at all timesand show it to a member of the Wardening/Portering staff if asked to do so. This is to protect you against theft and vandalism, and is necessary because we are a site right in the heart of Edinburgh city. We wish to keep you safe, so please cooperate with the wardens and porters. Failure to show an identity card when asked is a serious breach of the university code of discipline. Please report anything suspicious. Important: please dont let anyone into Mylne's Court who doesnt have a key. Professional thieves have gained entry to Mylne's in the past because residents let them in. Help us keep thieves out of your room. Please politely refer any strangers to the duty porter in the house office; he can then ring the appropriate resident and let them know their friend has arrived. If you have friends calling round, please ask them to introduce themselves to the porter when they arrive. Health and IllnessYou need to register with a doctor. Most residents will register with the University Health Service (university extension 50 2777 day/night). Please fill in the yellow card (its pinned to your noticeboard) and return it to the office within a week of arrival. You are invited to provide information on any chronic illness or disability from which you may suffer. If you choose to do so, please arrange an appointment with the Wardens (Chris or Alistair). FirePlease read the relevant guidelines posted in your room and familiarise yourself with the fire exits. If the Fire Alarm sounds, leave your room and the building immediately. Do not delay. Obey all instructions from firemen. Only return to the building when the fire officer on duty confirms that it is safe. Please note that, because of the serious risk of fire, candles and joss sticks are not permitted in student rooms. Interfering with smoke alarms is illegal.Students who interfere with smoke alarms may be reported to the police and will be liable to pay a set 75 fine. SmokingMylne's Court allows smoking in individual study bedrooms, but smoking is not permitted within any other part of any building. This rule is strictly enforced. Mail is placed in the mail boxes in the common room of your Edward Salvesen for the main complex, and in the main foyer of Patrick Geddes .It is distributed by House and room number. If you wish to secure your mail box you will need to buy a padlock (please do not lose the key!). Please tell your family your room number: your mail will be delivered more quickly if your room number is included in your address. TelephonesAll residents are provided with a ResNet telephone in their room: this is operated by a private company and not the university. Public telephones are also located in the front hall of each house. To dial free of charge to university extensions (e.g. house office), dial 0 and ask the operator for the university extension you require. Family and friends outside the UK who wish to contact you should dial +44 (0)131 650 6000; wait for voice, then dial your extension. If you have queries or problems relating to the ResNet system please contact the helpdesk on extension 22095 or by email: [email protected]. InternetYour room is equipped with a port to which gives you free 24hr access to the internet if you have a computer with an ethernet card. If you need help connecting this please contact [email protected]. Mylnes Court maintains a website advertising forthcoming events (including Freshers Week activities). The website is http://www.geocities.com/mylnescourthall. Email AnnouncementsYou can send and receive announcements from other The Mylne's Court Wardens by email. Please contact Chris for more information and to be placed on the list. LaundryThere are two laundries at Mylne's; one is situated next door to the house offic, Level 3, Edward Salvesen, and outside the back of Patrick Geddes. Each of the laundries is equiped with washing machines, tumble dryers and a limited amount of drying space. The machines are operated by 1 coins. Absence from the HouseIf you are away overnight, you should send an email to Alistair. The message should give the dates you are away. This is important. In case of fire or other emergency, it will mean firemen do not put themselves at risk trying to find you in your room if you are missing. Overnight GuestsFor the same reason, if you have an overnight guest you should send an email, giving your guests name and the dates he or she is staying. You may have guests for up to three nights; thereafter the Wardens permission must be obtained. If you are in any doubt about how long your guest is allowed to stay, please email the warden. Remember that formal or informal sub-letting of your room is not allowed (the term sub-letting includes permitting others to stay in your room during your absence from the hall free of charge or allowing the extended presence of guests). Your room key is in your care and should not be passed or lent to anyone else. You are responsible for the behaviour of your guests. BicyclesMylne's Court has two bicycle sheds, which are situated in the vennel (passageway) leading from the main complex towards Princes Street. To obtain a key, please see the domestic staff in the house office. Car ParkingThere are no student car parking facilities at Mylne's Court; any resident who intends bringing a car to Edinburgh will have to apply for a parking permit (to park on the road) from Edinburgh Council (the parking office is situated at 25 Waterloo Place - please contact them directly to find out what documentation you will require to register your car) PartiesParties are not permitted in individual residents rooms. You are, however, welcome to apply to have a Kitchen or Common Room party. You can book your party by completing an application form (word document) and gaining permission from one of the wardens. If you cannot download the online form, paper copies are available in the House Office Please be considerate to your neighbours. Your cooperation with porters, should they visit your party, is much appreciated. The Halls VCR and VideosStudents can borrow the hall VCR any day of the week apart from Sunday Evenings (which are the weekly video night), and can do so via the house office, on production of their matriculation card. We also have a large selection of videos that residents are welcome to borrow. As far as the television rooms themselves are concerned, apart from the above mentioned video nights, no-one can actually book the rooms - it is strictly first come, first served, and a dim view is taken when people try to evict other people from the room so they can watch what they want. Hall Social EventsThe Wardening Staff generally aim to hold one or two major events a term (more in the first term), such as Thanksgiving, Chinese New Year, Christmas Parties etc., along side the regular events of the Sunday video night and the bi-weekly Friday drinks (which usually start at 8pm). If any resident has any further ideas for events, they are encouraged to contact Chris to work out if it is a viable idea - no idea is too hair brain! Moving Rooms/Into Accommodation Services Flats/Out of Accommodation Services ResidencesAfter the fifth week of the first term, residents are able to request a transfer to alternative accommodation within Accommodation Services. If it is within Mylne's Court, or Accomodation Services properties, you should contact Pollock Halls directly who, on payment of an admistration fee of 40, will organise alternative arrangements. If you want to move out of Accommodation Services property all together, you are requested to contact the house warden in writing, outlining your reasons for doing so. NoiseAll residents are asked to be considerate of others and to avoid excessive noise. You have excellent taste in music, but please respect your neighbours desire for peace and quiet. Musical InstrumentsResidents may play unamplified musical instruments in their rooms between 6.00pm-7.00pm. KitchensKitchens are central to life at Mylne's Court: they are what turn halls of residence into homes. Most socialising goes on in kitchens, so its important they are clean and comfortable places to be in. Absent-minded cooking is the No. 1 cause of fire hazards: dont leave your cooking unattended at any time. If a fire alarm goes off, the fire brigade is called automatically.
Remember: it is clearly stated in the Halls and Houses brochure that you have a responsibility to clean up after yourself in the kitchen. Please be considerate towards other residents using your kitchen. Be safe, be clean. CleaningCleaning staff will clean your room once each week (toilet twice a week).Your cleaning day will be clearly indicated on a sheet inside your room.Any queries about cleaning should be directed in the first instance to Marion Bernard in the house office during normal office hours. Its a big help to the cleaners if you arrange your room tidily on cleaning days. |
