True Twinning

Why Overseas

True twinning is an innovative education concept that widens the scope of education opportunity and access for international students to study aboard by allowing them to complete the first half of their foreign degree program at a local college, such as Sunway College in Malaysia. They then proceed to complete the remaining half of their studies at a foreign university such as Western Michigan University in the United States.

The Twinning Program of Western Michigan University at Sunway College began in 1987, and over one thousand seven hundred students have participated in this program. Students in Malaysia study about twenty months at Sunway, then complete the second twenty months of their coursework at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA. A full time Resident Director from Western Michigan University is on-site at Sunway College to oversee the program and to offer assistance to the students enrolled in the program. The characteristics of the Western Michigan University True-Twinning Program are described below.

  • A true twining program can link with only one university in the United States. This is because each U.S. university has substantial flexibility in establishing its various degree curricula and graduation requirements as long as they are within accreditation guidelines.
  • Most American universities add new subjects in response to new developments, or to changing market conditions. Only a real twining program can synchronize its program to these changes because it is linked to one specific university.
  • Students are accepted direct from SPM (forecast results are accepted for the January intake). No pre-university matriculation or foundation studies are require. Introductory subjects are part of the university curriculum. Real twining saves time. In Malaysia and at Western Michigan University in the United States, there are 3 semesters per year. Most students may complete their degree in 3.5 years after SPM.
  • Real twining saves on cost of the degree. Saving range from 25-40% of the degree if done entirely in the United States. (Variation in savings depends on the degree program.)
  • Students are guaranteed acceptance by Western Michigan University of all subjects passed at Sunway College. Subject taught at the University are identical to those taught at Western Michigan University (same syllabus, same textbook).
  • Students are guaranteed transfer to Western Michigan University (provided they earn a CPGA of 2.0 or higher, the same standard of students at the University).
  • Students are guaranteed a place in each student’s desire major degree field. (students are pre-enrolled in subjects at the University intheir term of transfer.
  • The resident Director from Western Michigan University and teaching staff counsel students regarding the specific subjects they should take for their program. This means students will be properly qualified to work in their major upon arrival at the University.

A true-twinning program can also be used as a transfer program if students do not wish to have the benefits of twinning with Western Michigan University. They may transfer their credits to other outstanding American University (admission not guaranteed). Because Western Michigan University is widely recognized, most universities will accept transfer students from the Western Michigan University Program at Sunway College.

These courses will include selections from humanities, fine arts, social sciences, natural sciences, and mathematics, western and non-western cultures, health, and wellbeing.

Students have opportunities outside of classes to apply what they have learned so they can develop personal skills and knowledge through involvement and proble4m solving. Students may have opportunities to work with professors in research projects, become active in student government, or in one or more student organizations.
