SGI Galileo

The SGI Galileo is a video option for the Indigo and Indigo2 platforms. In addition to the Galileo, this driver also supports the following SGI products:

For recording image sequences, you must install Galileo 3.1 or higher.

To capture video from a conventional videotape recorder (VTR), you need an animation controller capable of producing a GPI trigger signal. You also need a Galileo trigger cable to connect the Galileo and the animation controller, in order to obtain accurate frame captures. For more information on the Galileo trigger cable, contact your SGI sales representative.

If you are using devices controlled over RS-232 or Ethernet, such as digital and/or laser disk recorders, you do not need the Galileo trigger cable.

Syntax

The syntax is:

device frame buffer name
          server_name server
          server_id socket
          server_host host
          defn
                    format format
                    videoin indevname devnumber
                    videoout outdevname devnumber
          enddefn
enddevice
device frame buffer name

The name is the name you want to assign to this device.

server_name server

The server is the name of the executable that controls the SGI Galileo frame buffer. It resides in the product_bin. The server should be fbdvl for the Galileo board. (If you relocate the server executable, you must specify the server as a full UNIX pathname.)

server_id socket

The socket is the socket number through which your application communicates with the console server process. This number must be unique to your UNIX system for each defined device and (Alias|Wavefront and non-Alias|Wavefront) server process.

server_host host

The host is the name of the workstation in which your Galileo resides. This can be the workstation that is executing your application, or another workstation that is connected to your workstation using Ethernet. If you are using one workstation for your application and another for the Galileo, you must install your application on both machines. The host should be localhost if the Galileo is connected to your workstation.

Device-specific statements

format format

The format indicates whether your Galileo is operating in NTSC or PAL video. If this line is omitted, NTSC is used by default.

videoin indevname devnumber

The indevname indicates the video input device. Options are:

default The system determines the device for you.

ev1 Specifies your SGI device (Galileo, Indigo2Video, or IndyVideo)

impact Specifies your SGI device (ImpactVideo).

vino Specifies the Video-In-No-Out feature of SGI Indy's. (This is available only on the Indy.) You can use this feature to capture video via the IndyCAM, the S-Video port, or the composite video port. Use the vcp command (video control panel) to set the video source.

Use the vlinfo command to determine the device name and device number to use. The device: devname # line gives the indevname and the outdevname to use.

Use the number value from one of the type = source kind = video lines as the videoin devnumber and the number = value from one of the type = Drain kind = video lines as the videoout devnumbers.

To use the Galileo with a digital, in Port of 2, you would include the following line in the device file entry: videoin ev1 2

videoout outdevname devnumber

The outdevname indicates the video output device. Options are:

default The system determines the device for you.

ev1 Specifies your SGI device (Galileo, Indigo2Video, or IndyVideo).

impact Specifies your SGI device (ImpactVideo).

none If the computer is not fitted with any video output card, videoout must be none.

Tip: Vino cannot be used for video output.
