Poly Shading palette > Vertex smooth

Smoothing Polyset Vertices

Smooth polyset vertices without creating new geometry.

Overview

After creating a polygonal model, you can smooth the model before rendering. Drag the middle mouse button left and right to preview the smooth, then click Go, or choose another tool to cancel.

This tool does not add or delete vertices. It simply decreases acute angles to make them appear slightly more rounded.

>
Note: This tool can result in non-planar polygons. If you need to export to games platforms, you may need to clean up the model after smoothing.

How to Use

1
Select Polygon Shading > Vertex smooth or click the icon.
The system prompts:
Select vertices to smooth.
2
Hold down the Shift key and click to pick the vertices you want to smooth.

As you pick vertices, a Go button is displayed:
The system prompts:
Select or deselect vertices to smooth. Click Go to commit smooth.

    • Click the left mouse button to continue to pick/unpick vertices.
    • Drag left and right with the middle mouse button to preview different amounts of smoothing. The geometry is not actually changed until you click Go. Click the left mouse button to cancel the preview.
    • Click the right mouse button to preview the smooth. The geometry is not actually changed until you click Go . Click the left mouse button to cancel the preview.
    • Click Go to smooth the vertices.

Vertex Smooth Options

Smooth Approach

Choose whether to smooth vertices using a Curvature based or Subdivision based algorithm. Each time you click Go the vertices are smoothed according to the Smooth Factord.
>
Note: The two different approaches to smoothing can give very different results. Try previewing both approaches to see which approach you want to use.

Smooth Factor

Set the amount of smoothing applied each time you click Go. Remember that you can interactively preview this value in the modeling window with the middle mouse button.
