Pilgrim Children

Grade: 2nd Grade
Project: "Pilgrim Place Mats" (also appropriate for 1-2nd grades)

We like to laminate this project into placemats each year for the 2nd Grade Thanksgiving Feast.

Materials:
Painting: Pilgrims going to Church
Oil pastels, crayons
Permanent black pens
One paper bag per 2 students.
Paper for over tables
Scissors

Prep: Each grocery bag must be soaked in warm water, removed and unglued (pulled apart) Lay out each bag, crumple, and lay flat to dry. Must be done 2 to 3 days before the scheduled class time, so that the bags have time to dry. The crumbled look adds to the texture of this project.
Cut one bag to placemat size (2 placemats per bag)

Activity :
1. Talk about Painting "Pilgrims going to church" and who the Pilgrims were. Notice their
clothes, the colors, and what that might say about the kind of people they were.
2. With Permanent Markers, Draw Step by Step draw Two Pilgrim children, and a turkey.
3. Emphasize Horizon line, placement of children, and concepts of foreground and background.
4. When picture has been drawn, have students color in with their best coloring.
5. When completed, laminate and (optional ) fringe the ends.

Objectives: Experience new textures - paper bag to color on.
Follow up on previous lessons on design and pattern. (Art elements of design)
Continue concept of horizon line, placement of focus (children), foreground and Background
Integrate with the social science lesson and the study of Indians and Pilgrims

Eslar targets: #2 Critical thinking . Think through process, and remember the steps.
#3 God's creation and appreciation for this. The indians appreciated creation but didn't know the Creator.
#2 Communication: Understanding how an artist communicates through art.
