Elementary Art Program

Objectives and Goals
The Elementary Art program is designed to help students of all ages
build a better understanding of the visual world around them through
the Arts. God is the great master artist, and each student has the
ability to be creative in many ways. We will be exploring a variety
of media so that each student has a chance to be creative and explore
different art media.
Overview
The course content in this class will include a study of the following:
1. Creative expression: Art production will be based upon many areas
of media.
2. Artistic perception: Teaching the students to perceive art in
nature, the environment, math,
science, imaginary creations. Also learning to identify the elements
and principles
of art including color theory, value, line design, texture, form,
and emphasis.
3. Aesthetics: Students will be learning to discover a variety of
artwork, to analyze and discover their own interpretations and judgments.
4. Art History: Students will acquire a beginning knowledge of some
artists of different periods and from different places.
Teaching Methods and Activities
These classes are taught with an emphasis in Art Production. A lesson
is introduced with a little history given, or discussion to help
students be observant of the new subject area. As many visuals are
used as possible. The Teacher proceeds with specific directions
or a demonstration for the students to follow. While the students
are working quietly on their project the teacher may interject or
ask about thoughts on aesthetics, art history, or elements of design.
ART Activities to include: Water
color design, acrylics (Christmas projects) , 3-dimensional sculpture,
colored pencils, oil pastels, chalk pastels, painting on different
surfaces such as wood, paper, furniture, tile, pumpkins, and the
playground.
Areas of integration with other subjects:
Art offers a wide variety of opportunities for integration with
other subject areas, particularly:
A. Science: Special projects using natural materials to make a collage,
animal drawings as for bug collections, bird studies,
geological formations, etc.
B. Social Science:
Art History is shown in the Social Study books
reflecting the lives of the time. These historical periods are studied
and used as a basis for art projects. i.e. Santa Barbara Missions
-
learning to draw Architecture.
C. Math: Creating geometric types of
line drawings using basic math
and geometry skills, i.e. mirror line designs
C. Literature:
Many of our art projects will be related to a current lesson a student
is having with his particular classroom. i.e. Charlotte's Web, Hungry
Caterpillar, etc.
Areas of integration with Biblical truths
and the Principles of Christian Living.
God created each of our students. He is the Master Artist, and we
are His students, to learn and to grow in His everlasting Love.
He takes pleasure in each of us, just as our students hopefully
will learn to grow, and enjoy the creations that each one of them
will make in art and in other subject areas. Art offers a wonderful
way for children to create what they learn about from the Scriptures;
for example-- Noah's ark, Jonah and the whale, Joseph and his multicolored
coat.
