Grade: Kindergarten and 1st Grade
Project: "Indian Buffalo Skins"
Prep: Each
grocery bag must be soaked in warm water, removed and unglued (pulled
apart) Lay out each bag, crumple, and laid flat to dry. Must be
done 2 to 3 days before the scheduled class time, so that the bags
have time to dry. Approx. 2 hours / 2 classes prep time
Materials:
Literature Integration: Legend of the Indian
Paint brush
Sample -- Indian design as above
Water basins/cups
Permanent black pens
Watercolors / brushes
One paper bag per 2 students.
Paper for over tables
Activity : Read about the Legend of the Indian Paint
Brush
Talk about and emphasize the stories told on the Buffalo skins.
1. On scratch paper draw different designs used by the Indians

7. Have the students draw a design around the border of the grocery
bag (buffalo skin).
8. Step by step draw Indian designs as to show an Indian story.
Help the students choose one design (or a few) for the inside of
their picture
9. Watercolor in their Indian designs..
Objectives: Experience new textures
Understand How Indians painted on rocks, caves, tents and buffalo
hides.
Integrate with the social science lesson and the study of Indians
and Pilgrims
Follow up on previous lessons on design and pattern. (Art elements
of design)
Eslar targets: #2 Critical thinking . Think through process, and
remember the steps.
#3 God's creation and appreciation for this. The Indians appreciated
creation but didn't know the Creator.
#2 Communication: Understanding how the Indians communicated without
the alphabet, and how we can communicate through art.
