Grade: 2nd Grade (or 3rd Grade)
Materials:
white 12 x 18 construction paper
Slides of the Santa Barbara sunsets/sunrises
Oil pastels or watercolor oil pastels
Tag board in 12-18 inch strips, 4 inches wide
Sample pastel poster of Morning sunrise
Details to point out:
While showing the slides, important to notice different features
And colors of a sunset/sunrise Have students point out the colors
they see.
Sunrise example is a picture of the sun rising over the mountains
over Carpenteria
Prep: Have slides and pictures ready to show
Activity: Demonstrate each step before the students.
1. Students tear a wavy line down the middle of the tag board.
2. Laying an edge down, demonstrate coloring and rubbing the oil
pastel to create a stencil look.
3. Repeat this step over and over again to create the mountain range
look.
4. Color the sun area yellow, and around it orange
5. Watercolor next the sky, paint in blue, then purple, then continue
to lighter colors. Object: to show the sky dark above, and light
below.
6. Add water or other effects to the picture.

of the sunsets.
