Materials: Water color paper 22 x 11 inches
Pictures of the Santa Barbara Mission
Slides of the Santa Barbara Mission
Pencils
Erasers
Watercolors
Brushes
Thin line type permanent pens

Architectural details to point out:
'Façade of the Mission is Greco - Roman (the columns and roof line)
Moorish towers on each side
3 statues are Faith, Hope and Charity
Faith has a cross, Hope Has her hands up?? And Charity (or caring or love)
Is holding a baby
St. Barbara is in the middle

Vetruvius Polion in 27 BC was the Roman architect. There is a picture from one of his books that was used for the Santa Barbara Mission
Built in 1793 (the front) and the left side area in 1805
This mission is also actually used as a home for elderly priests and brothers who live in the second story area. It is also used as a retreat area by many people in Santa Barbara area.

Prep: Visit the mission and observe the features of the mission
Take slides of the mission.
Need to take slides next time of details - Front Door, Statues, and towers.
(Students visited the mission after they started their drawings in Jan. 2000
--- drawings were completed afterwards in class )-3 sessions of art needed!

Activity:
1. Using observation skills, we looked at the picture slides of the mission
Students chose which view of mission they preferred.
2. Slowly, we drew the mission, drawing the larger shapes first, then adding the details that we observed.
3. When sketch is finished, the mission is lightly outlined in permanent pen.
4. Water color skills are reviewed Also, option is given to use watercolor pencils or watercolor crayons
5. Students watercolor their pictures. Beginning with the sky,(background) and working down the picture. Emphasis on mixing colors.
6. Pictures are matted for display.

Objectives: Learning about California History by studying the Mission of Santa
Barbara.
Observation skills used in looking at distinct architectural features.
Learning to draw from a picture (slide) Similar to on location drawing.
Understanding the use of line (design element)

Scriptural Inspiration: Corinthians 13 (Love chapter) Faith, hope and Love, but the greatest of these is love.
