Hungry Cata;pillar

Project: " Hungry Caterpillar"

Collage of many textures cut and created into a Caterpillar
2 class times 45-50 minutes each

Grades: Kindergarten and/or 1st Grades

Materials:
Tempera paints - green, yellow, orange, red, blue, purple
12 x 18 white construction paper -- lots
12x18 black construction paper
Circle/oval Stencil
Picture samples
Scissors
Brushes
Paper plates, sponges, brushes
White glue / glue sticks
Pastels, or crayons for finishing details (optional)
Bucket for water to wash hands later
Paint shirts to wear over clothes


Prep: 1st Class:
4 tables with 4 different painting opportunities.
2nd class: trace oval stencil on all colors of texture papers, especially the Green,
Yellow combinations.

Activity :
Students will create lots of different textures and colors at four different stations. The 2nd class, the students will cut out oval shapes and create caterpillars with funny faces. Read the story the Hungry Caterpillar to the class and notice the style of Eric Karl and his pictures that he has created.

1. Set up four stations(minimum) with different texture painting opportunities.
Samples of ideas are:
a. Texture paint scrapers
b. Sponge painting'
c. Straw blow painting'
d. Marble rolling over paint
e. Tooth brush spray painting
f. Finger painting


2. Set up color combinations:
Red and blue, orange and yellow, green and yellow, blue and purple
Blue and yellow, or blue and green


3. Set the students around the tables to watch as you demonstrate each table
and what they are expected to do.


4. With a timer, I have the students put their hands in the air! Then I say


5. " Ready begin" they have about 5 minutes for each activity.. When finished, I count down and say "Hands in the air!". While their hands are up, I move all the pictures, and set up for the next round of painting. When I am finished, I have the students move to the next table, and be ready for the next painting opportunity.
After 4 times, I have the students go wash their hands

6. I set all the pictures out to dry completely, Some will take a few hours to dry.


7. Prep for the next class: Draw
circles/ovals on the green/ yellow combination papers, or the green/blue combination papers.


8. Give each student 10 circles to cut out, a black 12x18 sheet of paper, and scraps of textured colored paper.
9. Students will cut out the circles and place orderly on the black paper to resemble a caterpillar
10. This will need to be glued down, face decorated.
11. Finishing: Add legs, antennas, flowers, grass etc to make the caterpillar their own.


Objectives:
Understanding the use of line (design elements), composition, and color
Understand the use of color when creating something to attract attention
Encourages imagination and Creativity.
Understanding the use of texture in creating a picture.

Communication. Using what students have learned and creating an artist expression Importance of following directions
