File Name Extensions

Review

Let's review what we've learned about file name extensions:

A file name extension is a period or dot (".") and 3-4 letters that are at the end of a file name.

The computer can be set up to show files either with or without file name extensions, but even if it is not showing the extension is always there and is always a part of the file name.

A file name extension tells the computer what type of file it is and which application the computer should use to open the file.

To show or hide file name extensions, follow these steps: Open any folder, go to the Tools menu and select Folder Options, click on the View tab and then remove the checkmark next to "Hide file extensions for known file types."

When saving a document, the "Save as Type" box in the Save As dialog box should not be changed because that tells the computer what type of file it is.

When renaming files, it is important to keep the same file name extension (when file name extensions are showing on the computer).

The computer may not be able to open a file if the file name extension has been removed or changed.
