![]() | Saving with the Save Toolbar Button |
The second way to save documents is to click on the Save toolbar button, which is located on the Standard toolbar.

In many applications, if the Save toolbar button does not appear in the window, you can open the View menu, select Toolbars and see if the Standard toolbar has a checkmark next to it. If it doesn't, select Standard by left-clicking on it once. This may not work in all application programs, however. (Note that Internet Explorer does not have a Save toolbar button.)
If the document is being saved for the first time, clicking on the Save toolbar button will bring up the Save As dialog box. Every time after that, clicking on the Save button will save the document under the same file name and in the same location. If you want to change the file name or location later, you will need to select Save As from the File menu.
Since it is very fast and easy to click on the Save toolbar button, you should click on it every few minutes to keep your work safe from power loss. Saving often is a good habit to get into!
Practice:
READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE STARTING.
| 1. | Using the instructions in the lesson called "How to Show Two Windows at Once," resize this lesson window. |
| 2. | Open the Start Menu and then the Programs submenu ("All Programs" in Windows XP), sliding the mouse pointer straight right onto the submenu. |
| 3. | Select Microsoft Word to open it. If Microsoft Word does not appear on the submenu list and there are downward pointing arrows at the bottom of the submenu, left-click once on the arrows to expand the submenu. If
Microsoft Word still does not appear, let your teacher know. |
| 4. | Resize the Microsoft Word window and place it underneath the lesson window so that you can read these instructions and work in the Microsoft Word window also. |
| 5. | Type your name in the empty Word document. |
| 6. | Click on the Save toolbar button. If the Save toolbar button is not showing, use the View menu to make sure the Standard toolbar is showing. |
| 7. | Look at the Save As dialog box and notice that it is the same dialog box as the one you saw when you practiced using Save (or Save As) in the File menu, on the previous page. |
| 8. | Click on the Cancel button. You do not need to save at this time. |
| 9. | Click on the Taskbar button to return to this lesson. |
