THE ANSWER IS ALWAYS YES
by Jen March

the answer is always yes
if you take the axe from the freezer
the tree will still fall
your cold hands will leave nothing behind them
if you find the wrench in the field
the sun will have kept it warm
you can place it against your cheek
mouth the word “pull”
you can do anything

but didn’t you want to be kissed?

you should’ve opened the door
walked into the field
but you sat with your shoveling hands
searched and searched for nothing
and when it finally came
you tried to bury it with your empty heart

what did you do with the loose tooth?

a dinner napkin? a teaspoon? a thimble-sized hole in the herb garden?

why didn’t you practice what you preached for the smallest prison?

you wanted nothing
how you cried like a baby for it
you thought a leafy poinsettia would grow there
or a hologram of salt flats might appear
long white
but nothing was eternally waiting for you
between everything
when you first saw it
you had no way of knowing it had always been yours
but now you see
you should’ve opened the door

if you turn off the tv close the book

you’ll find the scythe

hold tight

you’ll know what to do
