these categories in only very loose terms differ along
the crux of "academic essays" and "creative
non-fiction." While we are interested in looking at
academic essays and work that explores the personal,
we prefer essays and creative non-fiction that go
beyond the mere personal or the mere descriptive or
the mere academic.
Our wishes for the essays and creative non-fiction we
publish are guided by the ideas set forth by Rachel
Blau Du Plessis in her book _Blue Studios_:
"Contemporary essays are works of sociopersonal
"reading," they are also works of "wrought," a
thinking that occurs by the physical elaboration of
language, a work and a working in language, not only a
working through something intellectually or
emotionally. Not language for a summary of findings,
but language as the inventor of findings."
