The Ligurian League

The Ligurian League, remnant of the fallen Ligurian Empire, is known for its sea-borne merchant princes, city-states, long-handed thieves, and fabulous and terrible arenas.

The League is all that remains of the mighty Ligurian Empire, an empire that once straddled nearly the entire northern and southern continents, ruling with an iron and capable fist from the golden Empyrean Throne.

Both the League and the Empire were named after Liguria, a sizable land along the northern shore of the Sea of Marmora. From Liguria came the first great empire builders, the likes of Narus, Lusaerian, and Marmortus, from whom the Sea of Marmora drew its name.

From humble beginnings, warriors such as these gradually increased their lands, bringing diverse peoples together for the first time, and were directly responsible for the development of the civilized world.

This greatness ended in time through a combination of inner decay and rebellion by lesser lords, and invasions by horrible monsters and humanoids from the eastern wastes (beyond what is now known as Tachin) and the suddenly nightmarish Drachenfels.

Today, the Ligurian League is still a powerful nation, but much less so than in previous times. They are consummate traders and sailors, frequently sending explorers in the Great Ocean and south to the distant fringes of the southern continent.

No one actually sits on the legendary Empyrean Throne anymore. There have been several instances over time in which rulers have had the audacity to do so and died. Some deaths were apparently by accident, and others by more obvious and frightening means. The last death to occur on the throne was the Primarch of the League, Nadrillan, who simply immolated when his unfortunate posterior met the golden seat. It is believed that the honor of sitting in the throne is belongs to one foretold in a an ancient prophesy, which says that a 'golden one' will arise to restore the golden throne to its ages-past greatness.
