Magdalena
Magdalena is a Doll artist and Shiatsu Therapist  and computer programmer in Montreal Quebec.  The dolls she makes are often inspired by her work as a healer.  She began making dolls for her own healing.  For many year she was a computer programer and systems analyst, she also did batik, surface design and costuming. She won "Best in Show" in CostumeCon 5 in 1987.  Then she got very sick with migraines and environmental alergies.  After many experiences with traditional and alternative healing forms & much soul searching she became a Shiatsu therapist.  Shiatsu is a Japanese form of massage based on the same theory as acupuncture. She also had to give up batik and all chemical based arts because of the alergies.  The dolls became expressions of the emotions of this transition.

Calling the Stars - a Doorstop doll
Door stop typifies a lot of my dolls.  She was created in a workshop. We were given body parts to add something on for a roundrobin doll.  I was given a head meant for a flying doll. I didn't usually "fly" in my art.  So I made a contradiction - a doorstop - very weighted but yearning, calling the stars.  Very representative of my head space at that time.  I was trying to get up the courage to leave computer programming and do shiatsu fulltime.  Needless to say this doll did not go into the roundrobin pot, I made another, not so personal piece for that.
