ACT 14
ANIME/MANGA COMPARISON

(back to episode page)

Like the last few episodes, this episode has practically no basis in the manga. In a way this is surprising - I kind of expected the cliffhanger at the end of Act 13 to lead into a crucial plot point (such as Usagi discovering Mamoru's identity), but instead it led into an Ami character development episode.

Don't get me wrong, though - Ami character development is great, and I love that they've shown Ami gradually becoming very good friends with Usagi. In this episode it was taken to a higher level again - Ami risked her life, not because of the mission, not because Sailor Moon was in danger, but because she wanted Usagi back.

I did say "practically" no basis. I believe this episode was the first time that mention was made of the great evil that Queen Beryl is trying to revive. The manga was more specific about his much earlier - a "Great Leader" was mention in Act 2 - but it pretty much went unmentioned for a while after that. We first saw Queen Beryl actually talk to Queen Metaria (in the form a big hazy mass) in Act 7 of the manga. This is before Sailor V reveals that she is Sailor Venus and the Princess, but after Usagi discovers Mamoru's identity - clearly the order of events is quite different in PGSM. In the anime, we first see Queen Metaria in Episode 25, which is the same episode Sailor Jupiter appears - very different placing to both the manga and PGSM.

Ami using a laptop computer for totally unrealistic analysis seems to based on the computer that Ami first uses in Act 3 of the manga. The miniature computer that Luna gives her in Episode 9 of the anime also seems to be based on this.

This scene with Ami remembering having flashbacks to Usagi, and how the two of them became friends, reminded me of the climactic scene of Sailor Moon R: The Movie. I doubt it was actually their inspiration for the scene though.

Finally, the obligatory mention of the fact that the interaction between the Four Heavenly Kings has nothing in common with the manga or anime. In the manga, Nephrite was dead before we saw Kunzite for the first time, and Kunzite worked quite happily with Zoisite, until Zoisite was killed. In the anime, Nephrite was dead before we saw Kunzite do anything useful, and he and Zoisite were lovers. At this point in the anime's story arc, Zoisite was the most significant of the Four Heavenly Kings - he was trying to capture the Rainbow Crystals.
