ACT 12
ANIME/MANGA COMPARISON

(back to episode page)

In the manga and anime, Usagi and her friends had no idea who Minako was until they learned that Sailor V/Venus was Minako when not transformed. This event has yet to happen in PGSM, but most of this episode revolves around Usagi's interactions with Minako. In addition to this, the dynamics of the Dark Kingdom - things such as Nephrite's love for Queen Beryl (and subsequent jealousy) and Zoisite's independence - did not really exist in the manga and were radically different in the anime. Also, the subplot about Zoisite slowly remembering his past does not come from the manga or anime.

This means, as usual, that most of the episode is original to PGSM.

However, several important elements of the episode did come from the manga - including the most important part, the revelation that Sailor V is Sailor Venus and the Princess of the Moon. In the manga, Sailor V appeared at the end of Act 7, during the battle with Zoisite, which is similar to how she appears in a battle in PGSM (although in this case it was a battle with a monster, under Nephrite's orders). The battle with Zoisite in the manga was related to a rather silly plot about videos turning people into zombies, and Sailor Venus killed Zoisite before she appeared. Artemis then introduced her as the Moon Princess in Act 8, and the plot moved swiftly onwards. In PGSM, of course, Zoisite appeared after Venus' revelation and after the monster had been killed. Venus attacks Zoisite after he tries to attack her than remembers about Tuxedo Mask being Endymion, his master, and rather than dying, he turns into a stone (an idea from later on in the manga).

In the manga, Sailor Venus appeared before the others and showed that she was the Sailor V they knew about by putting the mask over her face. However, in PGSM she arrives at the battle as Sailor V and, after throwing off her mask, transforms into Sailor Venus in a golden glow. Less important, but still noteworthy, is that the way Minako used to transform into Sailor V is different in PGSM to in the original Sailor V manga. She had her own transformation cry like most of the Sailor Guardians, as opposed to in PGSM where she instantly became Sailor V as she was running along. Incidentally, this seems to be inconsistent with Act 11 of PGSM, where it was strongly suggested that she puts the Sailor V costume on like normal clothes.

The overall order of events has been changed a bit from the manga. In the manga, Usagi learnt that Mamoru is Tuxedo Mask before Sailor Venus appeared, and there were also important revelations about the Dark Kingdom that came earlier than this in the manga.

As for the anime... Well, the anime had sort of wandered off on its own by around this point. Sailor Venus appeared during a battle with Zoisite in episode 33, but the circumstances were very different, and the idea of Sailor Venus being the Moon Princess was removed entirely. (However, the anime did do a very cheap cliffhanger where Sailor Venus was asked if she was the Princess at the end of episode 33, and revealed at the beginning of episode 34 that she wasn't.) Zoisite died in episode 35, but rather than being killed by Sailor Venus, he was killed by Queen Beryl for disobeying her orders. Zoisite died in Kunzite's arms - they were lovers in the anime, as opposed to in the manga where we barely saw them interact, and PGSM where Kunzite isn't even introduced until the episode after this one. Finally, the idea of Endymion being the Four Heavenly Kings' Master was completely removed in the anime.
