Dave Luman & Eular Frances Fountain

My grandma Lillie Bell often recalled how five-year-old Dave cried for their mother after her passing. Lillie Bell, who was only thirteen herself at that time, said she "rocked little Dave to sleep many a night," and remembered making him his first breeches, as baby boys wore dresses (called aprons) in that era. She always had a tender spot in her heart for "little Dave."
Dave and his brother Jaret both served in the United States Army in France during WWI. The boys came back and married neighbor girls. As newlyweds, Dave Luman and Eular Fountain lived on her parents' place in "FountainTown" and farmed. In the 1930's, Dave got a job at nearby Camp Worth and continued to farm. In the fall of 1939, Dave laid his crop by and moved to Jasper to go to work for the WPA doing roadwork. Although he no longer raised cash crops, he continued to farm to help provide for his family's needs. He worked hard all week, and looked forward on Saturday night to listening to The Grand Ole Opry, according to his son D.L.
In 1945, Dave moved his family to Woodville and started cutting pulpwood with J. W. Reid, whom he called "the boy." Josie says that her dad would often say, "That damn boy liked to have killed me today!" Emmet Luman says that "Uncle Dave" and J. W. could cut a load of pulpwood with a crosscut saw in the length of time it took anyone else to cut half a load.  J. W.,  who had been in the service in WWII, later married Josie, and the couple gave Dave four grandchildren.
Dave towered well over six feet. When he stood and extended his arm straight out, Eular could walk under his arm without touching it. He was jolly and mischievous, joked around a lot, gave everyone nicknames, and was known for being a clever domino player. Emmet Luman says that "Uncle Dave"  would expose his dominoes, letting his partner hide his hand, and still win the game. Dave drank "stout" coffee,  which was made by boiling it in an open pot on the stove. His daughter Josie says that one tablespoon of her daddy's brewed coffee added to a cup of water made a potent drink. Dave was very fond of his wife's homemade biscuits. Dave's daughter Lillie Myrl remembers that her daddy would not eat chicken or eggs bought from the store. He raised his own chickens, insisting that he knew what the chickens had eaten when he fed them.
He loved horses, and often told his children about horses he'd had in his youth. Soon after Dave married Eular, a cousin of his borrowed the horse which he owned at that time and "rode it to death."
Although Dave was well-liked, he drew criticism from church leaders at Mt. Herman Missionary Baptist Church when he gave boisterous game parties for the young people. Eddie explains that the BMA (Baptist Missionary Association) was "so straight-laced that they couldn't stoop over." Eddie describes "Uncle Dave" as a person who was devoted to his family, and one who visited family members and kept in touch with them. Eddie says the first time he remembers "Uncle Dave" was when he (Dave) visited Eddie's Granny Oliver (Dave's sister, Liza). Aunt Liza lived in an old log house in the Enterprise community in Shelby County. Eddie was four years old at the time, and Uncle Dave brought Aunt Eular, D. L., and Josie with him. D.L. had a tricycle, the first one Eddie had ever seen.
Lillie Myrl, who was born when D. L. was nineteen years old and Josie was eight years old, recalls that her daddy would never allow her mother to punish her, because she was "the baby." Lillie Myrl says that when she "got in Dutch" with her mother, she ran to her daddy, and he hid her. Dave retired in the 1950's and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
After developing pneumonia from a cold, Dave passed away at age seventy-five. His nephew Emmet had given Dave his last shave on the day he died. Emmet recalls his uncle's kind attitude, even in his dying hours.  Dave is buried at Magnolia Cemetery in Woodville. Lillie Myrl still makes her home in Woodville, where she has been employed by the Woodville Independent School District for thirty years and holds the position of Cafeteria Manager. Dave's daughter Josie, who lives in Tyler, is retired after a long career as secretary to a title lawyer. She remains active with a part-time job as a data entry clerk. His son D. L. owns and manages two Dairy Queen restaurants in Louisiana. Among his eight grandchildren, Jo Ellen Bailey, the firstborn,  is assistant to the general manager of  television station KFDM in Beaumont. Another granddaughter, Janay Rainey, is Registrar at Woodville High School. (Reba Jernigan Powers)
