Hssiss are known throughout the galaxy as Dark side Dragons. While Hssiss are primarily found on Ambria, they have been seen on other worlds where the masters of the dark side of the force once lived. Old Republic files dating back several millennia. Little Else is known about the species.
The Hssiss were formed on the planet Ambria when Jedi Master Thon battled Sith spirits and defeated them when he put all the evil energy into Lake Natth. The results to the native creatures in the lakes waters was to mutate them and the Hssiss were the result of this mutation.
The Jedi named Tionne, one of Master Skywalker's students, was able to locate most of the available information on the mysterious Hssiss. She also encountered a Hssis on the planet Vjun while on a research trip. She described her encounter with a hssiss in her journal.
She stated that she could not sense it at first but she could sense that there was something wrong. It seemed to be able to hide it's presence from her perception. It seemed to know when she was near as it rose from the water and lunged at her as she neared the still dark waters of the lake.
She described the hssiss as a large green-gray retile, about two meters long. It had a double row of spikes running down it's back from head to tail. It's fangs were nearly seven centimeters in length and protruded from the top and bottom of it's jaw.
She was able to kill it by chopping of it's head but she came away with wounds on her back caused by the hssiss sharp claws. The wounds quickly became infected despite the application of antivenom. She was able to cure the infection in a Jedi healing trance. She concluded that they could inflict a poisonous touch of the dark side with either their teeth or claws.
She later found more information about them in the Emperor's discarded files. She learned that Nomi Sunrider encountered one in the lake during her training on Ambria. It also was apparent the many dark side users kept packs of hssiss with them at all times for protection. High Prophet Jedgar used them to mask his power from suspicious Jedi and the Sith were said to have used them to the same effect in ancient times.
The hssiss have a limited intelligence that enables them to use the dark side energy to confuse and distract an opponent.
