Well, nothing much exciting to report. Now that I'm finally beginning to look a bit pregnant, I'm also beginning to feel more pregnant. Monday night I slept horribly because I kept having to pee. Usually, I pee 3 or 4 times a night, but Monday night I did not sleep between 11:15 and 3:15 because I had to run to the bathroom almost exactly every 30 minutes. And of course I still had to wake up and go a few times after I finally fell asleep. I cannot fathom why I had to go so much...I did nothing different that night than any other night. I called my doctor yesterday morning because I know excessively frequent urination can be a sign of a bladder infection, so even though I have no other symptoms, I thought I should alert my doctor. Sure enough, they had me do a urinalysis just to be safe, but since I've had no word from them, I'm assuming that means it was negative. My other big whine is that my back and my ligaments are killing me and my tolerance for heat has gone from low to non-existent. I'm really kind of worried about the fall because walking is causing me so much discomfort, both as I walk and after I'm done. I took a very brief walk to a couple of campus buildings today, no more than 1/2 or 3/4 of a mile round trip and it hurt the whole way and now my sciatic nerve is killing me. I also found that I was feeling very overheated, and when I mentioned this to Nate, he kindly informed me that it is only 78 today (and there's a nice breeze, too). Aargh. I know I can take care of the back thing when I go home and lay on my massage pad (the most wonderful invention EVER!), but there's not much I can do about the heat. I always love fall, but I'm extra-super-duper looking forward to it this year! :) Oh well, I suppose I should shut my trap and glory in being pregnant...after all, it took me long enough to get here! And I am thankful that everything seems to be OK with Duckie and that I am generally in good health, too. But I still need to whine every now and again. :) On a happy note, people are really starting to notice I'm pregnant. In fact, yesterday was the first time a stranger noticed I was pregnant. It was a nurse at Nate's eye doctor's office, who I don't believe I have ever told I was pregnant - she asked me when I am due. Also, I ran into one of my fellow grad students today who I hadn't seen in a couple of months and her first response was, "Wow, look at you!" Actually, I still don't think I look all that different than I did pre-pregnancy, but fortunately the way maternity clothes are cut help make a fat belly look more like a pregnant belly. Thank goodness for small blessings!

July 12, 2002 20w4d My First Bladder Infection :(

Well, sure enough, all that peeing Monday night was a sign of no good. I do have a bladder infection so I have to be on antibiotics for the next week. I am thankful, however, that I don't have some of the worse symptoms of a bladder infection. I pee so much these days anyway that a few extra trips really doesn't seem to make much of a difference. :) What did make me kind of angry though was the way my doctor's office handled it. They ordered the urinalysis "stat" on Tuesday, so I hustled over to the lab and made my donation. Since I never heard back, I assumed that must have meant all was fine. (Why can't doctors just call to give you all of your test results, positive or negative?) But what do you know, it was positive and the office called a prescription in for me but neglected to actually call ME! I only found out about it when my pharmacy called yesterday (which they don't do until the prescription has sat there for a certain amount of time) to let me know I had a prescription of antibiotics waiting for me. At which point I called my doc's office and basically got an, "Oops, sorry nobody called." Sheesh. To think I could have begun whipping this thing nearly 48 hours before I did. Grrrr... On a totally unrelated note, I got my first real taste of the other kind of round ligament pain last night. So far, I've just had the dull, constant ache variety. But there is another variation that causes brief stabbing pains. I had about a 20 minute episode of those buggers last night when I was trying to fall asleep. Youch! I actually woke Nate up from a deep sleep with one of them because I jerked so hard when it hit me. They just come so out of the blue that there is no preparing for the. On a happy note, though, I flinched for a much more pleasant reason today. The baby gave me its first wallop of a kick! We were sitting at lunch and it actually startled me it was so hard. It was really cool. :) Now I just hope I can get back to sleeping well. I have not had a good night's sleep all week. Between the constant peeing, my increased restless leg problems, and a brain that apparently refuses to shut off and go to sleep, I haven't fallen asleep before 3 yet. In fact, last night I actually had trouble getting back to sleep after one of my pee trips. That NEVER happens to me. I often have trouble falling asleep initially, but I never have trouble falling back asleep in the middle of the night if something wakes me up. I hope this is just a short-lived thing and not something that lasts for the rest of the pregnancy. It's not so bad right now when I can sleep until 10 or 11 to make up for it, but that ain't gonna be an option come this fall. Well, that's about it. I'll check back in soon.

Well, I must admit I don't have much to update at the moment. The weekend was fairly uneventful. Nate and I did get a large portion of the future baby room cleared so that we can move the furniture into it sometime soon. There are still a couple of piles of stuff that need going through, but we got our big "pantry" (it's sort of an external closet with lots of shelves that we bought last year since our house has no real pantry) cleared out and moved to it's new location, which was the biggest chore. I think my bladder infection is getting better although I'm still having to pee an awful lot. But Saturday night I FINALLY got a good night's sleep, my first in nearly a week. Then last night, it was back to the same old routine. It took me forever to fall asleep and I was never allowed to sleep for long thanks to my constantly nagging bladder. I'm also a little concerned about my blood sugar. I didn't really monitor it while Cheryl was here. Then last week I wasn't sticking to the diet 100% because my schedule was so off from the insomnia that it was nearly impossible to fit in all my meals and snacks everyday. I was still basically playing by the rules I was given (cut out sugar, watch carbs, always pair carbs with a protein source) but I still found that my numbers were creeping up. When I started the diet, I had picture perfect numbers, and then last week I was always kind of hovering around 120, the max I should be at. Assuming it was from not having followed the diet exactly, I made a commitment to start following the diet to the letter again, so imagine my surprise when my numbers shot up even further on Saturday. I had a couple of readings around 140, which is WAY too high. Fortunately, I asked about it online and got some good news: my bladder infection may be the culprit. Apparently, infections can wreak havoc with your blood sugar. I only started the antibiotics on Friday, so on Saturday the infection was probably still raging. By Sunday, my numbers improved dramatically. Now I'm just waiting to see how it goes today. My post-breakfast reading was a bit high, so that doesn't bode well, but I'd like to see how I do after all my other meals before I jump to any conclusions. If I'm still having high readings on Wednesday, I'll call my doctor then. Please pray for me that I get things back under control because I am petrified of having to go on insulin injections, especially this early in the pregnancy!
