When Duo was younger his parents were killed by the war and he became one of many orphans who had to scrounge the streets looking for food and stealing it. At age 7 a priest took him into the Maxwell Church (thus Duo "Maxwell" was born). Here Duo was cleaned up and his life turned around. The Nun Sister Helen (who became Duo's favorite) braided his hair for the first time after he protested to having it cut off. He thought it was cool and said it wouldn't get in the way of his stealing now.
A.C 187 At the Church:
*Duo receives the priest outfit that we often see him wear in Gundam. He thinks its uncomfortble.
*The priest and nuns easily fall in love with Duo and the priest thinks that Duo would make a great priest one day.
*Duo was not adopted like the other children because they kept on sending him back.
*Duo beat up some kids so bad they had to go to the hospital because they told him he smelled dirty. Sister Helen gave him a hug and assured him they were wrong and to ignore them next time.
*Duo tells a Nun that he beleives there is no God because if there really was a God he would stop the war, and there would be no orphans like him.
* Duo states that he only believes in Shinigami "The God of Death" because he has never seen a miracle but he has seen lots of dead people.
* The Church was always full of laughter even since Duo had lived there.
A.C. 188 At the Church:
The laughter stopped and war returned. Soldiers invaded the church and began stirring trouble. The priest was knocked to the ground with a gun for talking of peace and Sister Helen was slapped. Duo heard the soldiers say they needed a mobile suit so he said he would go steal one for them so that they would go away and leave them alone. Duo then gave his line of "I run and I hide, but I never tell a lie." he then took off against Sister Helens wishes and broke into a military base being shot and and everything, and stole a truck with a mobile suit. When he got back to the Church it was in ruins, the priest was dead, and Sister Helen laid in the rubble with blood trailing form her mouth. There conversation before she died is as follows:
Sister Helen: I'm so glad... You're alright, aren't you?
Duo: Sister!
Sister Helen: Don't worry us like that. The Father was thinking of you until his very last moment...
Duo: I-I'll call a doctor right away!
Sister Helen: The Federation Army has come. We can't... leave here...
Duo: Is- is it my fault? Because I stole a Mobile Suit from the Federation?!
Sister Helen: The Father was... a wonderful example... He preached peace to... everyone... till the end...
Duo: What do you mean, wonderful?! He was just stupid, wasn't he?! What did he accomplish by getting himself killed?
Sister Helen: (Reaches up and touches her hand to Duo's cheek)Duo... May God... bless you and... keep... you...(Her hand drops away)
The total deathtoll of this awful incident was 245. The rebellion of the colony was stopped by The Federation and OZ Special Forces. This became known as the 'Maxwell Massacre'
A.C. 192 Duo Meets Profesor G
@ The Moons North Pole
(A spacecraft is on the lunar surface)
Man#1: (Wearing a spacesuit and is staring at a large block in the shape of a pyramid) With this spaceship, we could have left the solar system...
Man#2: (Also wearing a spacesuit) However, right now, it will not do us any good. All we can do is leave it here until the day comes when we can use it.
Man#1, now revealed to be Professor G. : What are you going to do now?
Man#2: Go back to earth. I want to go to the seaside and feel the waves...
Professor G.: Hn. Just what I'd expect from you...
Man#2: Take care.
Professor G.: Yeah...
(The spaceship, now flying through space)
Duo: Let go! Let me go!
Professor G.: Let go of him.
Voice: But...
Professor G.: It's alright, let him go.
Professor G.: Kid... I can't believe you snuck into this ship. I thought my security system was flawless. How did you do it?
Duo: That's a professional secret. But, so your pride isn't hurt too badly, I'll admit I had a rough time getting in.
Professor G.: Interesting brat.
Duo: I'm not a brat. My name is Duo. I run, and I hide, but I never lie--Duo Maxwell!
Professor G.: Maxwell...? Ha ha... Maxwell's little demon, hm?
Duo: Not a demon.
Duo: I'm Shinigami...!
A.C. 195 Before Operation Meteor
Before Duo is supposed to leave for Operation Meteor he tries to blow up Deathscythe. Professor G foils his plans and discovers that Duo was going to kill everyone associated with Deathscythe including himself beacause he didn't want his 'buddy' to be use as the tool in a massacre. Professor G tells Duo to take Deathscythe to Earth any way and to just ignore O.M.
He told Duo to meet a man on the Pacific named Howard and to of course go as Shinigami.
A.C 195 After Operation Meteor
Duo is the lighthearted guy of Gundam who is always in a happy mood, cracks jokes, and will bring a smile to your face. He is much needed to relieve Heero's seriousness, Trowa's quietness, and Wufei's arrogance
He became part of the Sweeper Group, which is a space-salvaging operation. This shows why when he is not piloting he can be seen on piles of junk sorting through them.
His romantic interest if you want to call it that would be Hilde. She was an OZ soldier and captured him. Through talking to him she decided to quit OZ, no longer knowing which side were the good guys any more, In a few episodes we see that she and Duo are living together.
Duo's gundam Deathscythe evetually is captured by OZ.
To make an example of it, they broadcast its destuction to all the colonies. Who was its destructor? None other thenm Trowa. Duo was extremely hurt by seeing this.
Duo eventually gets caught by OZ himself but in the process learns that the gundam scientists were rebuilding Deathscythe to the upgraded version, Deathscythe Hell.
At the end of Endless Waltz, we see that Duo returns to his pile of junk, and who is there with him, The one and only Hilde.
