Wufei belongs to an ancient Chinese warrior clan. They believed in self-discipline, honor, and defending the weak. They were powerful and respected in Eurasia. Years ago when they became feared of being too powerful they were exiled to the L5 Colonies by an unjust government.
A custom of this clan is to marry at the age of 14, Wufei chose the strongest woman in the clan, Merian. She was the granddaughter of Master Long, the leader of the clan. When General Septem sends troops to 'disinfect' the colony, Merian takes out a Tallgeese suit to fight, but ends up dying in Wufei's arms.
Merian refered to herself as Nataku, who was a strong Chinese warrior.
In memory of his decesed wife, we always hear Wufei call his gundam Nataku.
Knowing about his clan and wife helps explain alot of Wufei's personality. Especailly why he believes so much in 'Seigi' (justice), Wufei can come off as being an arrogant, stuck up, mean, and sometimes evil character. But he's really just full of pride.
But what he definatley is, is sexist. He always calls women 'onna' (woman), instead of using their names. He thinks all women are weak.
When Wufei blows up half of the Lake Victoria base, he has an encounter with Noin. This is where we first see his sexism towards woman. With calling her onna and saying she is weak because she is a woman. He spares her life simply for the fact that she is a woman.
Another important factor to take into consideration, is that Wufei lost to Treize. He challenged him and they have a duel with swords. Treize wins. Wufei told him "Kill me, if you don't I'll kill you later" Treize spares his life hoping to be able to battle with him again some other time in mobile suits. This almost killed his pride. He feels so low about himself and beleives he should no longer pilot Nataku. He thought that he was only capable of wining against those weaker then himself. When he meets Sally Po, he shares this with her. She talks with him, and Wufei pilots Nataku once again to help out Sally, because he belives she is weak.
Wufei eventually allows himself to be captured because he and Nataku have no fighting power left. While imprisoned, the scientist upgrade Shenlong into Altron. When the newly powered Wufei and Altron get loose into space, as hell comes to anyone who crosses their path.
Wufei goes on a killing rampage taking out just about every mobile suit he comes across. Wufei believes he is fighting for a sense of justice and takes it upon himself to decide who is right or wrong and who should live or die.
Some people beleive that this outbusrt of killing was to due to that he was using the ZERO system. But this is most likely not true. I don't believe that. He just needed to get some things off his chest.
In the end Wufei gets to battle Treize again but this time in Wufei's specialty Gundams. Wufei ends up winning by killing Treize which suprisingly makes him really really upset.
In Endless Waltz we are again shown Wufei's evil side.
He joins Mariemaia's army not with good intents but because he felt it was right. He believed that "it is where the souls of those who fight gather"
And also that,
"Even though all enemies were defeated, Earth did not change one bit."
He thinks that he is still fighting Treize even though he killed him, but finally at the end he is able to put Trieze to rest and move the hell on with his life.
Wufei agrees to become a Preventer with Sally Po, and the last image we are shown is them both in space wearing the Preventer uniforms on a space ship.
