Doom II

LEVEL OF THE WEEK
Monday January 26th
NEW RELEASE
The Darkening

by The Darkening Team (WWW Page)

Episode One of The Darkening features 11 new levels and some great new textures, as well as music by David "Tolywn" Shaw (who's worked on Icarus, Memento Mori etc).

I did two levels for this project, but without bias I can honestly say that this is the best megawad I've seen in a long, long time. It's also the first time I've played through a whole megawad in one sitting without using any cheat codes.

All I can say is that it's damned impressive. Discordia (MAP08) is the best Doom level I've ever done, and it probably isn't the best of the pack...

This is one WAD you shouldn't miss!

1 - Tantrum
by Ola Bjorling

An outstanding level. There's an awful amount of work gone into this level, and the buildings and rooms are full of brilliant little details, and there's some very detailed lighting and shadow effects in places. It's also great fun to play...

2 - Pazuzu
by T. Elliot Cannon

Highly detailed and very hard with beautiful build and lighting.

Also by T. Elliot Cannon -

3 - Memento Mori II
by Denis Moeller et al (WWW Page)

A vastly superior sequel to the original, rather flawed, Memento Mori. Features lots of brilliant new graphics and music, as well as 32 new levels from the Memento Mori crew. The levels have a definite feel, unlike MM I which looked like a pick-and-mix of WADs in comparison. The levels are of a higher standard than the original MM as well, with some stunning settings.

4 - Requiem
by The Requiem Team

An amazing collection of 32 new levels with new textures and music. With ontributions from the likes of Dario Casali, Thomas Moeller and David Shaw, this was one of the most hyped releases since Memento Mori II. Surprisingly, it really was worth all the waiting... Consistently well designed levels (with only a few letting the side down) with one or two true stunners, including a tribute to Quake with some amazing 3D effects.

6 - Phobos - Relive The Nightmare
by Shamus Young

Inspired by the original shareware Doom I levels, this is a brilliant set of nine new levels with extra graphics, music and sounds to boot. It has that authentic Doom feel to it, and is better than many of the levels that id have done since 'Knee Deep in the Dead'.

7 - Chord NG
by Malcolm Sailor

Yet another fast and furious level from Malcolm Sailor. So hard it hurts, and lots of annoyingly good architecture and lighting to distract you while that 48th hell knight rips your entrails from your bloody chest...

8 - Cleimos 20
by Rand and Steven Phares (WWW Page)

An update of the Cleimos WAD for Doom (see it's Doom I Top Ten entry). This one includes a full 32 new levels, as well as new graphics and new sounds. It's very similar to the original in parts, but with enough new bits to make it a challenge to anyone who's finished the first one.

Comes in two parts. To download click here and here.

9 - Unconditional Elimination
by Andy Badorek

Damned impressive, highly detailed, nicely lit and deceptively large level. You start and end in the same place, apparently in the middle of a slimy pit. But although the actual play area is fairly small, the surrounding rooms, corridors and halls are intricate, tightly packed and beautifully built. Whole new areas open at the flick of a switch as you battle your way back to the start. Compact and very difficult.
This WAD was Level Of The Week for Friday 24th October...

10 -
Metal
Metal 2

by
Kurt Kesler

Metal is the more impressive of the two, using lots of converted Quake metal textures. It's beautifully detailed, intricately built, and damned hard to boot. This is one you won't want to miss...
Metal 2 doesn't have the Quake textures, but is still worth a look. Almost as detailed as Metal, with some impressive design on a grand scale.
