FIRST SERGEANT JOB DESCRIPTION

Advises and assists the commander in managing unit activities and exercises general supervision over assigned enlisted personnel. Advises and assists the commander in maintaining discipline and standards regarding quality force. Provides guidance to assigned enlisted personnel on matters of leadership, military courtesy, personal appearance, self-discipline, and personal adherence to standards. Helps ensure all supervisors set an appropriate example for subordinates. Corrects conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline. Coordinates and cooperates with military and civil police authorities. Promotes welfare, morale and health of enlisted personnel. Ensures frequent contact with unit enlisted personnel at work, housing, and recreation areas. Advises commander on status of unit morale and welfare, and promotes unit recreation and social programs. Counsels enlisted personnel and takes action to resolve problems or complaints. Coordinates resolution of complex problems with commander and all base agencies. Represents the commander at base meetings and councils and when conducting tours through unit areas. Maintains liaison with base agencies to ensure the best possible services and facilities for enlisted personnel. Visits enlisted personnel in the hospital or confinement, and helps them take care of personal matters. Assists commander in preparing and presenting unit training and information programs. Attends staff meetings and assists commander at commander's call. Helps enlisted personnel adapt to military environment and adjust to the organization and duty assignment. Ensures enlisted personnel get training in military subjects such as dress, customs and courtesies, drill and ceremonies, housekeeping, hygiene, and sanitation. Monitors unit sponsorship program and conducts orientation programs for newly assigned enlisted personnel. Supports and promotes professional military education activities. Supervises care and upkeep of unit dormitories and adjacent grounds. Ensures enlisted personnel are assigned to area and building maintenance duties, and supervises dormitory management activities. Monitors procurement of dormitory and recreational supplies and equipment. Ensures coordination with civil engineering and services personnel to maintain proper maintenance and repair. Inspects dormitories, dayrooms, and unit areas, and initiates corrective action when required. Monitors unit administration. Supervises administrative actions directed by the commander. Coordinates with supervisors of enlisted personnel to schedule unit functions and duties, leaves and passes, and other absences from duty. Performs quality force review and ensures timely processing of performance reports, awards and decorations, favorable communications, promotions, demotions, classification actions, quality control actions, and disciplinary actions.
