Shalmaneser 1 Eponym Sequence

               Next Page

The documents with multiple eponyms indicate the following sequence of 23 eponyms in Mid-to-late Shalmaneser and very early Tukulti-ninurta 1.  The potential for insertions is indicated by (for example) VAT 14477 in which 3 eponyms are mentioned, but the period is provably longer than 7 years. Thus, the multiple eponym documents show that the eponyms are close neighbours, but does not absolutely prove contiguity. This sequence follows Freydank, BCMG.

Obviously, there are a number of permutations which are consistent with this data (e.g. some interleaving of groups), but such permutations do not at this time seem to have an obvious impact for most chronological purposes. This gives a sequence of 23 eponyms which are dated with great precision – given the underlying information.  This eponym sequence can be applied to floruit information with interesting results.

[1] There are three reported Qibi-assur eponyms in this period: Qibi-assur<Ibassi-ili; Qibi-assur<Samash-aha-iddina [brother to Ubru] and Qibi-assur<Silli-marduk.  There are only a few letters with patronymic.  In addition to Istar-eris<Sulmanu-qarrad, Istar-eris<Samash-aha-iddina is reported as an eponym (together with his two brothers).
