The close up of the rock is what is known as a limestone pavement. Limestone is alkaline in composition and eaten away by rainwater which is slightly acid, creating these distinctive weathering patterns.

In response to criticism that I am always looking grumpy on photographs, I took a picture of myself smiling. I still managed a frown, though.

I liked the looks on the faces of the statues of the girls praying at the feet of the Virgin Mary in the local churchyard, so I took a picture of them.

By the end of the walk, the weather was beginning to set in, so we headed back to Galway and saw the new year in in the upstairs room of a little pub on a backstreet. There was a band on playing traditional tunes and a good atmosphere. One bloke in the toilet told me how he loved his wife to bits.

There are photos of the night, but I didn't take them. When they are e-mailed to us, they will go here - I promise.
