| Alexanderplatz is split in two by Alexanderplatz Bahnhof (railway station) which was our local station to catch the S and U Bahn trains. The western side of Alexanderplatz was the home of Marx, Engels and the Town Hall, but on the other side of the railway station was the slightly seedier side where the crusties and the drunks hang out. This side is also the home of the World Time Clock which tells you the time across the globe. I like the atomic design on top. I also stumbled across some dazzling communist artworks on the side of an office block. I wonder how long that block will last as I heard that Alexanderplatz is going to be redeveloped and a load of new skyscrapers are to be built. The city seems to be one big building site with cranes and demolition gangs everywhere. Incidentally, the East Germans seemed to go in for those copper coloured tinted windows. Take another close look at the Fernsehturm windows. |
