- When you book a working holiday you will be sent two publications
with your joining instructions - "Essential Information" and
"Safely Does It". Try to find a few minutes to read these
before you attend the working holiday as they contain very useful
information.
- Normally the group leader will telephone you a few days before
the start of the holiday. Use this opportunity to ask any questions
that you may have. Also listen carefully if they give you directions
to the basecamp as some of these places can be a bit difficult to find
and the directions on the joining instructions are not always very
detailed.
- If you do not know the area that you are travelling to then try
to take a road atlas with you on your journey.
- Leave contact details with somebody at home. Emergency phone
numbers are provided on the joining instructions. Don't rely on mobile
phones as these often don't work in some of the remote areas where
working holidays are held.
- Try not to arrive on the Friday evening feeling very hungry.
Often the evening meal will not be until about 8.00pm, after everybody
has arrived and cooked the meal.
- Be prepared to "muck-in". You will find that the more
you get involved with the whole holiday the more you will get out of
it.
- Take old clothes for working in. They will most likely get very
dirty during the holiday.
- Take a small back pack for during the day. You may be working
some distance from the basecamp and so you will need to keep your
packed lunch, drinks, waterproofs, jumper, and camera etc. with you
all day.
- Have fun. If you work at your own pace you will achieve a great
sense of satisfaction at completing a job well done and you will enjoy
yourself as well.
