About Ship: The D'Ktahg was a fast, long-ranged heavy fighter used by the Klingons from 2259-2286. At nearly 25 meters, it was over 25% longer than its nearest Federation counterpart, the Lancer. Initially, SFI classified the D'Ktahg as a corvette. This classification was downgraded to heavy fighter when it was learned that the D'Ktahg only had an endurance of 50 hours without refuelling, an impressive figure for a fighter, but several orders of magnitude short of a starship.

The D'Ktahg was a sleek, fast vessel intended to defend starbases and act as an advance scout for the Klingon fleet. Its armaments consisted of four lasers mounted in underwing pods, but these were upgraded to disruptors in 2269. The nacelles are of interest, as they are proportionally longer than typical Klingon nacelles of that era. The D'Ktahg's nacelles were optimized for fast cruising, not slow patrolling. It actually experienced its highest efficiency when travelling at warp factor six (old scale).

The Targ, a variant of the D'Ktahg, featured smaller nacelles, less-powerful armaments, and a small crew stateroom just behind the cockpit. It was used for spacelanes patrol and search-and-rescue missions. Its range was significantly greater than the D'Ktahg (approximately 4 weeks), but its top speed was only w/f 5, and its emergency speed was around w/f 6. The D'Ktahg and the Targs were often carried by a jaK'toH heavy transport modified for use as a carrier (The Klingons did not produce a dedicated carrier until 2307).

The D'Ktahg had very high performance for its day. It was produced in large numbers at several fleet construction yards throughout the Klingon Empire. It was superceded by more efficient designs in 2286, and most examples of this type were either scrapped or modified to the Targ specification. While the D'Ktahg is no longer in service, the Targ soldiers on even today.

Starfleet gratefully acknowledges the cooperation and assistance of its counterparts in the Klingon Imperial Defense forces for providing much of the historical data regarding this vessel.
