History: P.E. Shotwell Stadium was built in 1959 to serve the needs of the Abilene Independent School District, and after the construction of Cooper High School, it became the shared home for the Cougars and Abilene High Eagles.  Originally named Public Schools Stadium, the 15,000+ seat venue was renamed a year later in honor of the late P.E. "Pete" Shotwell who coached Abilene High to three consecutive state championships in the 1950's.

Shotwell Stadium remained relatively unchanged until the spring of 2002 when the AISD Board of Trustees approved renovations to the 42 year old stadium.  The first phase of the renovations included removing the old playing surface and installing a new state of the art playing field, drainage system, access ramps, goalposts and television monitors on the west side (home side) concourse.  The new
SafePlay turf was installed in time for the 2002 season at a cost of $1.2 million to be payed for by an exclusive vendor contract with the AbTex Beverage Corp.

The next phase of renovations began in the spring of 2003 and included adding a new state of the art scoreboard to the north endzone.  The new scoreboard includes a video animation screen and was buit and installed by the
Spectrum Corp. using funds raised through advertising sales.  The old scoreboard located in the south endzone was updated and now works in conjunction with the new board making Shotwell one of only a hand full of venues in Texas to use two scoreboards.

Many other renovations are on tap for the very near future.  Those include paving the parking lots, construction of a new fieldhouse, new stadium entrances and a new or renovated press box.  Other possible renovations include remodeled restrooms, concession stands and seating.

Location: Shotwell Stadium is located at 1525 E. South 11th, near the intersection of Hwy. 36 and Loop 322.  Shotwell is located within walking distance of the Abilene Regional Airport, Lytle Lake, the Taylor County Exposition Center, Nelson Park and the Abilene Zoo.
