The Abilene Cooper Cougars roared onto the Texas high school football scene in 1961.  Well, it was more like a weak "meow."  The Coogs posted an 0-9-1 mark their first season led by head coach Clovis Riley.  Coach Merrill Green took over the young program in 1965 and by his second year he had introduced the Coogs to the Little Southwest Confrence.  Just six years after the very first kickoff in school history, the Coogs were playing Austin Reagan for the state championship.  The Coogs posted winning seasons for the next decade and solidified themselves as powers in West Texas.

The Cougars struggled during the '80s, but found new life under a former Cougar.  Randy Allen took over the Cooper program in 1991 and by the next year his team was back in the playoffs.  The Coogs started an impressive playoff streak that continues to this day... the longest in the district and one of the longest in the state.  In 1996 the Coogs made it back to the state finals where they lost to another Austin team, this time the Westlake Chaparrals.  In 1999 Coach Randy Quisenberry took over the program and never missed a beat.  In coach Quisenberry's short time at Cooper, his teams enjoyed great success posting a record of 41 wins to just 18 losses.  The Spring of 2004 marked the end of the Randy Quisenberry chapter, but the opening of a new chapter in Cougar Football.

In 42 seasons the Coogs have posted a record of 274-191-12.  Not bad when you consider that for those 41 years the Coogs have played in the toughest district in Texas high school football.  During that time they have won 11 district chamionships, 9 bi-district championships, 7 area championships, 5 regional semi-final championships, 2 regional final championships, 2 semi-final championships and appeared in 2 state championship games.  The Coogs come from a rich history, but the best history has yet to be written.
