Daaim
Shabazz, Ph.D.
Dr. Shabazz is the creator and webmaster of "The Chess Drum,"
an information vehicle devised many years ago, but launched in 2001. The
purpose of the website is to highlight the accomplishments of chess players
in the Pan-African Diaspora and promote the virtues of the royal game.
The website exceeds 3400 pages and is viewed in over 150 countries with
34,000 visitors a month. In the future, he hopes to transform the website
into a full-service entity for chess promotion.
Dr. Shabazz, was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois and took to chess
at age 14 after learning the moves from an encyclopedia. He later joined
the chess club at his all-Black high school which boasted 5,000 students
and 100 players. He rose through the ranks and became 1st board leading
his team to the city title as a senior. After winning the Illinois Junior
Closed the next year, Dr. Shabazz became rated "Expert" by the
United States Chess Federation, but his universities studies slowed his
march to chess "masterdom." Despite a busy academic schedule,
he has participated in two National Opens, two U.S. Opens, four Chicago
Opens and five World Opens. Most memorable chess moment was serving as
the webmaster at the historic Wilbert Paige Memorial in Harlem, New York.
Dr. Shabazz hold a B.S. Degree in Computer Science from Chicago State
University, an M.B.A. degree from Clark Atlanta University and a Ph.D.
in International Affairs also from Clark Atlanta University. He currently
teaches at Florida A&M University which is located in Tallahassee,
Florida and specializes in International Business, e-Business and other
technical subjects. In his "spare" time, he is a voracious reader,
enjoys working on The Chess Drum, listening to all types of music and
engaging in athletic activities. His favorite chess activities are post-mortem
analysis and of course he likes to play a game or two of blitz!
