Master Amon Simutowe
Born January 6, 1982 in Ndola, Zambia, Amon burst on the chess scene blazing
a trail of tournament successes unprecedented for a player from the African
continent. He took up the royal sport from his brother at the age of 10,
won the Zambian Junior Championship at 13, and won the Zambian National
Championship at the record age of 14! He went on to win the first of his
two African Junior Championships in 1999 and earned his International
Master's title. After successfully defending his title in 2000, he took
joint 2nd at the World Junior Championships where he scored 8½-4½.
His influence has been felt around Africa and has participated throughout
the continent and most recently in Libya for the 2004 FIDE World Chess
Championships. In 2001, he won Zambia's prestigious "Sportsman of
the Year," and is widely-recognized in his native land. Simutowe
is a 3-time World Championship candidate and has participated in a number
of international tournaments around the world including the 2000 and 2002
Olympiad tournaments as Zambia's top board, the British Championship (England),
Goodricke Invitational (India), Cappelle La Grande (France), Bad Wörishofen
(Germany), Salou Costa Daurada (Spain), Olympic Masters (Switzerland),
the World Open (USA), the Wilbert Paige Memorial (USA) and the Carlos
Torre Memorial (Mexico).
Simutowe has earned two GM norms toward the three to become an International
Grandmaster and is currently a student at the University of Texas-Dallas.
