[Cerebus]
Characters

MainPage

In Minds, many of the characters of Cerebus are revealed to be external projections of himself after contact with magic; The Crawler, Elrod, Turg, The Brothers of The Black Sun, The Regency Elf, The Roach. This revelation is made in connection with the fact that Cerebus had a destiny before him, but chose a different path with different consequences. The Fake Death is only alluded to in connection with the other manifestations of Cerebus.

ABBESS OF GOOD ABBEY:
A Cirinist, she controls all of Good Abbey's 15 electoral votes. (Cerebus #40-41)

AGERDEN, Duke of:
Old friend of Cerebus', formerly a shady operator, now a (mostly) legitimate Duke. (Cerebus #19)

ALANNE:
A milkmaid whose pregnancy was blamed on Necross the Mad and was forced to marry Gums, the village idiot. (Cerebus #13)

ALEXANDRA:
A young woman living in Lower Iest. (Cerebus #154-155)

ALFRED:
See Suenteus Po 2.

ANDRENA, GREAT:
Cirinist ruler in the Upper City in Iest during the time of Suenteus Po 3. (Cerebus #160)

[Roach] ARTEMIS STRONG (a.k.a. The Roach):
By day, he was an (unnamed) merchant, who used to be a sorcerer, but now destroys magic objects because they are "bad for business". By night, he is The Cockroach (Cerebus #11-12), a masked avenger, who continually pummels passers-by on the mistaken assumption that they had something to do with the death of his parents. He is about 50 years old when Cerebus first met him.
His second incarnation (Cerebus #21-22) was molded by president Weisshaupt into "Captain Cockroach". He had been convinced by Weisshaupt to move many marble statues from the basement to the attic. "It's actually not difficult to build a physically superior specimen... The *tough* part is finding someone *gullible* enough to work at it for six months...". He teamed with Elrod as "Bunky the Albino". [MoonRoach]
His third incarnation (Cerebus #30) was the "Moon Roach". Moon Roach attacked people by dropping large crescent moons made of stone onto them. Kevitch was a co-existenting sub-personality of the Moon Roach, and they often have mental conversations with each other. Moon Roach had yet another personality of "Blake Jockley", a taxi driver (Cerebus #39).
He then became under Astoria's control, she having seduced him. She has implanted his newfound interest in economics. She has created a new personality, Artemis Strong. Astoria alleges that he came up with the Moon Roach personality himself, but Michelle later contradicts this.
"Normalroach" (Cerebus #154) seems to be integrating his personalities into a more coherent (or at least self-aware) whole. These are led by a new identity, the Punisheroach.
Moon Roach had started to splinter. The imagined vulnerability to "frostonite" was to remain an aspect of his personality for a long time.
The Roach then exhibiting clear telepathic/mystical powers, and a much clearer picture of the world than he normally has, though still far from completely sane. He also has semi-automatic crossbows with exploding quarrels (designed by the Claremont part of his now-"integrated" personality).
Later, after an abortive love affair, he turns into Swoon. He has black cloak and black-pit eyes. The Roach also decides at this point that since he is Dream, Elrod must be Dream's older sister Death.
Among his other personalities were "Wolveroach", "Secret Sacred Wars Roach", and "Kay Sarah Sarah".
Cerebus often refers to him as "the bug" or "cootie".
It is revealed in Minds that the Roach is an external projection of Cerebus after contact with magic.
(Cerebus #11-13, 21-22, 30-33, 39-42, 154-172).

"ARTIST":
An unnamed artist who owns a castle not far from Iest. He possesses a number of unusual artifacts, including his castle (a relic of the Black Tower Period), Sump-Thing, and the Albatross. (The castle is allegedly just rented.) He may very well be the "good" magician who stands in opposition to Claremont. He may also be an Illusionist. He is skilled at symbolist painting and at the use of subliminal messages. (Cerebus #25, 37)

[Astoria] ASTORIA:
Born in Lower Felda (Cerebus #163). She is Lord Julius' third ex-wife. This led to her station as Duchess of Parmoc. Astoria seems proficient at magic, primarily but not limited to illusionism. She created Kevillism, and wrote Kevillist Origins.
"... I believe in state-owned prostitution, pharmaceutically- assisted miscarriages, ownership of men, guaranteed minimum incomes for women over the age of fifteen and the inalienable right to self-determination within those parameters... "
(Cerebus #31-42, 155, 157-159, 160-172)

[Baskin] BASKIN:
Lord Julius's stenographer and assistant. Holds the title Minister for Executive Planning "in honor of his paying two hundred pieces a month".
Cerebus, Lord Julius and Baskin go out looking for the Palnu Revolutionary Underground... starting underground in Palnu! How revolutionary! While investigating "The Pits", they are captured and attacked by forces known as "The Eye of the Pyramid". (Cerebus #15)
(Cerebus #15, 26, 38-39, 151, 162, 169)

CHEEN, GENERAL:
A member of the military tribunal ruling Lower Felda (Cerebus #22).

[Cirin] CIRIN:
The leader of the Cirinist movement (for all purposes ruler of Iest and Lower Felda) and one of the two other aardvarks in Estarcion.
Cirin is actually named Serna; she was the assistant to the real Cirin who was the peacful founder of the Cirinist movement. Serna grew impatient with the slow progress of the movement and organized a coup during which she forcibly changed identities with her mentor, seized power and went militaristic.
Cirin's forces took control of Iest while Cerebus made his first Ascension to the moon. It is learned that in earlier years, Astoria was her own protege who parted ways due to ideological differences (namely, abortion). Author of The New Matriarchy, "Dualism as Fallacy", and presumably other works.
Cirin refuses to accept new ideas, remains in consensus with her old worldview. She stays this way, later reshaping (controlling) reality/memory as she has done before to fit her worldview (Minds, Going Home).
(Cerebus #20, 28, 38, 100, 151-152, 154-156, 159-160-172).

CLAREMONT, PROFESSOR CHARLES X:

Viktor Davis takes Exception to the Consensus worldview. He believes in individuality and freedom. (Reads)

DEADALBINO:
See Elrod.

"DEATH":
Allegedly, a demon that assumed the identity of "Death" 7000 years ago. He can't control people who are too intelligent or headstrong. He has 12 gems, and was awaiting the Chaos Gem, which had to be brought willingly to him . With these gems, he would have ussured in a golden age (disease, famine, whole populations wiped out in mere days). This plan is foiled unwittingly by Cerebus (Cerebus #4). Death is devoured by succubi. (Cerebus #4, 8, 151, 171-172)
It is revealed in Minds that the "Fake" Death is an external projection of Cerebus after contact with magic.

DEIDRE:
A city guard in Beduin. (Cerebus #11)

DEGUIN:
A city guard in Beduin. (Cerebus #11)

A schemer and con artist. Usually works Turg. He drugged Cerebus and made him fall in love with Jaka to use her to get Cerebus to lead him to treasure. (Cerebus #6, 16)

[Elf] ELF, REGENCY:
Her memory extends back at least 800 years (Cerebus #29). Before the Regency Hotel came along, she was one of the Wood Elves in Iest. She has a taste for whiskey, and likes to play Wickets.
The "Fake" Regency Elf is implied to have been an aspect of Suenteus Po 1 (Cerebus #156).
She reveals (Cerebus #166) that she was subconsciously created by Cerebus while he was in the Eighth Sphere (Cerebus #28), influenced by the presence of the *real* Regency Elf, who was confined to the Ambassador Suite.
(Cerebus #29-33, 39, 41-42, 155-157, 161-162, 167, 171)

[Elrod] ELROD OF MELVINBONE:
Claims to be a wanderer, race, a sorcerer, slayer of his kin, and the last ruler of a dying race, but there is no evidence that any of this is more than a figment of his imagination. Carrying a sword named "Seersucker" (the original SeerSucker was destroyed by Cerebus in Cerebus #4), Elrod is an albino with no pupils.
He once heard about the "Festival of the Black Sun" and went to their temple to participate, unaware the worshippers there were death worshippers. (Cerebus #7)
While he hangs out a lot with the Roach, and is often seen as his sidekick, Elrod has some deductive powers which the Roach lacks. Cerebus can seem to do anything he chooses to Elrod, except make him go away. Elrod is convinced that Cerebus is a small man wearing a "bunny suit".
Elrod is "killed", but remains an animate spirit, able to possess living bodies as "Deadalbino" Elrod returns to his own body shortly after, which returns to life.(Cerebus #22).
Afterwards, he is revealed as quite a popular figure. The public actually believes his claims about himself even more than he does. Lord Julius has adopted him as his son, which only adds to his popularity.
It is revealed in Minds that Elrod is an external projections of Cerebus after contact with magic.
(Cerebus #4, 7, 8, 12, 21-22, 33-35, 37-39, 155, 157, 159-165, 167)

FAEIRE, WOOD:
Cerebus mentions a "wood faerie", but the context makes it difficult to tell if he is referring to a mythical creature or not. (Cerebus #14)

FERAS, TANES:
A well-dressed young man with a lung infextion that causes shortness of breath. He loved Red Sophia from the first time he saw her. Henrot hired Cerebus to accompany Red Sophia to avenge her "besmirched honour" at the hands of Feras, who watched her bathe. Cerebus forced Red Sophia to marry him. (Cerebus #3). He expired soon after.

FILGATE:
A representative of The Docks ("Dadocks") in the Iestan legislature. Something of a gangster type, illiterate. Grew up in the same neighborhood as "Loahd" Rodney. (Cerebus #37-38, 41-42, 166)

FLAME JEWEL THIEVES:
Unnamed duo who hire Cerebus to capture the Flame Jewel from a local wizard. Though successful, with the wizard's death, the jewel reverted back into a simple walnut. (Cerebus #1).

FLAME JEWEL WIZARD:
Illusionist. Keeper of the Flame Jewel. With moon-rise, his power is halved. A few spells he utilized were shadow creatures, skeletons, and a serpent dragon. Also used an energy incantation ("Ak-aman Ra Taak Se Terim Sera") to blast objects. Twenty years ago, he could project intruders into another dimension. Also uses botany (nata lotus blossoms). He has been alive for centuries. When he was killed by Cerebus, he crumbled to dust and his illusions vanished - even the castle (Cerebus #1).

GARSK:
Captain of the guards in Imesh in Cerebus' youth (Cerebus #9).

Of the House of Tavers. She has a star-maked birthmark below her belly button (Cerebus #232). Lord Julius is her uncle. Said to be the most beautiful woman east of the Sofim.
Raised in luxury and privliege, Jaka was expected to be the polite and proper socialite when she matured, yet her early adult years were spent as a dancer. It was while dancing in a tavern that Jaka was paid by E'Lass to drug Cerebus and keep him occupied for a night. (E'lass once got Jaka to make a priest break a 10 year vow of silence.) She does the task she was paid for, but is touched inside by Cerebus' affection and devotion, albeit under the influence. She considers running off with him, but he forgot who she was when the drug wore off.
Twice during Cerebus campaign and term as Prime Minister, Jaka comes to him all but begging him to walk away from his responsibilities before they destroy him, but Cerebus refuses. When he finds himself as Pope, he sends for her only to find that she has since been married to Rick Nash. He now has power and fortune but it can't buy him a married woman. During Melmoth, it is a Cirinist soldier bragging about having hurt and possibly killed Jaka in prison that sends Cerebus on his deadly massacre into the upper city. She subsequently returns to Cerebus at the end of Rick's Story. While her political alignments are unclear, Jaka knows she has power and even impunity where the Cirinists are concerned... and she uses it to her advantage.
(Cerebus #6, 16, 35-38, 157, 166-167, 169).

JANETTE:
A student at Madame Dufort's School for Gifted Debutantes. (Cerebus #23-24)

After an encounter with his know-it-all-wise-guy evil twin, took to calling himself George.
The Judge (Or a Judge...), like the Elf, is also referred to by one external reference: Cirin knows him by the name Belinus. (Cerebus #155-158, 161, 165, 171)

LORD JULIUS:
Julius has risen from a Kitchen Staff Supervisor to be Grandlord of Palnu through a combination of thoroughly confusing his opponents, and outright bribery on a mass scale. He is the uncle of Jaka (a relation which has been accompanied by incestuous allusions more than once), and the ex-husband of Astoria.
"Lord Julius does not permit his employees to speak to each other except through him... He believes that it causes much dissatisfaction in the city..." "How does anything get done?" This is a *bureaucracy*, sir... nothing is supposed to get done." (Cerebus #15).
Lord Julius has almost eliminated crime in Palnu, largely by having a Board of Justice "renowned for their wisdom, experience... and unblemished record of three thousand two hundred and eighty-one convictions in three thousand two hundred and eighty-one trials..." (Cerebus #16)
Lord Julius has a knack for frustrating foes and allies alike and a talent for showing up where and when least expected. Having given Cerebus a job in the senior Iestan cabinet role of "Kitchen Staff Supervisor", Lord Julius is largely responsible for Cerebus' rise in power and popularity. While he has appeared more recently, his current title and whereabouts are unknown since the Cirinists came to power in Iest.
(Cerebus #14-19, 26, 28-30, 32, 34-35, 37-42, 151, 157, 160-162, 164, 166, 169)

A four-foot priest of the Black Sun. He has read countles tomes of the Black Sun. He found an obscure diety from the religion's distant past - one of the revered Nameless Ones. He made a costume to resemble this god (an aardvark). His plan was to appear before the assembled brothers, quoting ancient prophecies, and hailed as a new god. He discovered a concealed entryway a few months prior to the rear of the Pit where he could watch the eremony and at the appropriate moment use a few smoke bombs and make his "ressurection". However, Elrod exposes him (thinking Mit was Cerebus). (Cerebus #7)

MOONROACH:
A personality of Artemis.

[Rick Nash] NASH, RICK:
Introduced in Jaka's Story as the well-intented but freeloading husband of Jaka, he is naturally fearful of his otherwise quiet house-guest Cerebus upon finding out he was the same Cerebus who formerly held the offices of Prime Minister and Pope. Young Rick seems extremely impressionable but not all too bright. When Cirinist guards arrest him and Jaka, Mrs. Thatcher reveals that Jaka had robbed him of his greatest desire, fatherhood, by having an abortion; as intended by the Cirinists, Rick uses this as grounds for a divorce. Rick then disappears for nearly a hundred issues until his return in Rick's Story when he is seen as the much older and larger well-intented but freeloading bar patron. After being used by Cerebus, but possibly enlightened at the same time, Rick leaves angrily telling Cerebus he will see him only once more in their lives. First appeared in issue 114.

PIEUREU:
A native of Theyr. (Cerebus #13)

[Suenteus Po] PO, SUENTEUS:
One of the two other aardavrks in Estarcion. In Cerebus #108, the Judge tells Cerebus all about Suenteus Po, who nearly conquered the known world hundreds of years earlier, but was killed shortly before his success when thrown off a horse. In Cerebus #159, Po makes comments which in tandem with the Judge's account say he is the same Po. No explanation is made as to how he then appears in the flesh in Cerebus #174. A wise and passive loner, he is both the balance and the opposite to Cirin. He appears aware that the cycle of events that he, Cerebus, Astoria and Cirin go through has repeated dozens of times through history, but unlike the others Po seems to remember and learn from each cycle. He is contemplative, patient and most of all aware of the world about him; his efforts in this and his other lives concentrate solely on securing the personal liberties of all living beings. He has a penchant for chess, which he seems to see as the perfect analogy for life and all circumstance. Someone claiming to be Po speaks with Cerebus (Cerebus #20, 28, 63, 156) and his likeness appears in Astoria's illusion (Cerebus #59), but Po isn't heard for real until Cerebus #157, seen (astrally) until Cerebus #158, and seen in reality until Cerebus #174.

[Posey] POSEY, ARCHBISHOP:
An Archbishop of the Eastern Orthodox Church Of Tarim. (Cerebus #160)

PRESTON, SERGEANT:

A personality of the Cockroach.

RASHAZAR, PRINCE:
Prince of Eshnospur, at least until the rebellion (Cerebus #24).

Reid, Victor:
Victor Reid is in harmony with the Consensus based worldview: Get married, have children. If everyone agrees, everyone will be happy. Control and power through the unspoken (implied) social mandate of conformity. (Reads)

[Red Sophia] SOPHIA, RED
Daughter of Henrot. After she got out of school, she started working with her dad but hated it. So, she started up with swords and could soon beat any 5 of the town boys. She also took a few dance courses (she wouldn't do it for a living though). Since she used (dated) standard Pandrovian duel assault, Cerebus believed some sodden exiled baron taught her.
The girl has sworn to give herself to the one who can beat her in battle. Cerebus did (Cerebus #3), snd so ordered her to marry Feras. She can sew sequins onto helmets, monograms hankerchiefs. Good at hand-holding; her specialty is Gurannan tonsil kissing.
Cerebus meets her again (Cerebus #10, 19). Cerebus meets Henrot, Sophia's father, again. He has created a wizardious copy of his daughter, named Greeta. Cerebus and Red Sophia are incidentally married, which Cerebus really did not know before the day after.

SALICE, ELWYN:
A guard at Hobbsgate Prison (Cerebus #29).

SWARTSKOF, NORMINA:
Apparently highly ranked (the top?) of Cirin's military forces. Led the conquest of Iest. Killed by Punisheroach (Cerebus #152-156)

[Mrs Thatcher] Thatcher, Mrs.:
A senior official within Cirin's regieme, Mrs. Thatcher is most often seen monitoring the activities of high profile individuals and dictating the reaction of the ruling Mothers. Most notably, Mrs. Thatcher was responsible for the interrogation of Jaka and Rick at the end of Jaka's Story and for keeping tabs on Cerebus during Guys and Rick's Story. First appeared in issue 133.

THOL, TECHOT:

THUGG THE UNSEEMLY:
He overhears Red Sophia drooling over an unresponsive Cerebus and decides she is better off with him. So, he challenges Cerebus for right to possess her. When Cerebus ditched the man and left the tavern, Red Sophia beat him up herself. She is afraid of lightning and thunder (runs in the family). (Cerebus #3)

Also called "Turg the unduly tall". Large, not too bright muscleman, working for E'Lass. He met Cerebus while following a man who knew where treasure was hidden. He tried beating the information out of Cerebus (whom the dying man told the location to), but Cerebus won. Since then, he has been afraid of Cerebus. (Cerebus #6, 16).
It is revealed in Minds that Turg is an external projection of Cerebus after contact with magic.

TURL:
A captain of the Conniptin armies (Cerebus #8).

VERA:
A Cirinist prison guard/stenographer. In charge of the woman known only as "Vera'a Prisoner". (Cerebus #163-164)

"VERA'S PRISONER":
Apparently, used to be an influential Cirinist until her imprisonment in 1410. She is very concerned about exactness of language, and whether or not phrases are complimentary. (Cerebus #163-164)

[Weisshaupt] WEISSHAUPT, PRESIDENT ADAM:
His uncle is Suenteus Po.
"Weisshaupt was a millionaire nut. He is not unlike the current crop of 19th century conservatives who figure that you can run a country like a corporation. Once his face was known and there was no hope for Elrod to assist in getting his activities sanctioned, he was only going one place; military jail and then the gallows. The Military Government of Lower Felda doesn't tolerate any movement from the private sector into their domain; governing." (Cerebus #26).
"...Weisshaupt himself ... would be the most aristocratic, unorthodox, indefatigable obnoxiously self-confident and creatively schizophrenic individual in all of the Feldwar Valley. Weisshaupt escapes his fate (Cerebus #22) and reappears with his plan for the United Feldwar States intact and nearing fruition... Weisshaupt would be coming back and ... undoubtedly end up on the gallows for crimes against Lower Felda's military tribunal... He's using the people against the established order. He's fighting a guerrilla war with established banking institutions, adopting a common, grass-roots perception of current events and offering it as an alternative to the present government. Then he got caught. His more recent success (Church & State I] stems from aligning himself with the vanishing aristocracy, the new merchant class and, basically, anyone with enough money and influence to help him move things along. (Swords of Cerebus volume 6).
(Cerebus #21, 22, 31)

WENDA, MOTHER:
A Cirinist operating in Togith. She must not be very high in the Cirinist ranks as she has never met Cirin (she thinks Cerebus is a "unique creature"). (Cerebus #20, 21, 28)

Withers, Pud:
Jakas employer (Ricks Story). Obsessed with Jakas body.

WYNDMEL-SMYTH, LADY ARISTONNIA and LORD LUCIUS:
Attended Lord Julius' Pit Festival . Owner of the Wyndmel Diamond. (Cerebus #16, 28, 156)
